Young Communicator’s Congress: A Memoir and Analysis
Young Communicator's Congress is a communication and media convention organized by the
Polytechnic University of the Philippines primarily by the university's College of Communication.
It is an event made not only for all PUPians but also for other schools. It showcases different
respectable keynote speakers from various fields of communication and media.
The first and second Young Communicator's Congress was both held in AFP Theater in
Quezon City while the third one was organized in Bulwagang Balagatas Hall in Ninoy Aquino
Library and Learning Resource Center inside the PUP on Thursday morning up to evening of
February 13, 2014 setting the theme "Respectable Transformation of the Philippine Media
Landscape: The Young Communicators Call".
The first keynote speaker was supposedly UNTV's president and CEO Mr. Daniel Razon.
Unfortunately, he did not come due to personal matters that require his immediate attention so he
sends Atty. Reggie Tonggol instead to represent him.
During the third YCC, PUP's first ever Mabini Media Awards takes place also. After Mr.

2. Tonggol delivered the message of Dr. Razon and awarded by a certificate of appreciation, winners
from radio category was announced by the hosts.
The second keynote speaker was Tapatan Ni Tunying of ABS-CBN host Mr. Anthony
Taberna. Using his sub theme “Radio as Legacy Media Vs New Media" in delivering his speech,
he narrate his working experiences and how his views and actions changed when he got a family.
After every keynote speaker’s speech, different Mabini Media Award categories were called. After
Mr. Taberna, winners in print category were next to accepting their awards.
Manila Bulletin's Mr. Art Samaniego, the third keynote speaker, tackles "Print Vs Online
News Publication". Here, he said that soon they will not print any newspaper because of the fast
growing connection of internet today that lets you one click away from news. It is more handy and
hassle free that the newspaper itself.
After lunch break, everybody goes back to their places and listen to the fourth speaker, Ms.
Rochell Gamboa Hilario of Philex Mining Corporation. With her topic "Digital Legacy Media
Integration in Advertising and Public Relations" , she showed different advertising campaigns and
commercials and explain what was tje company want to think its audience or perceive its audience
about.
Afterwards, winners in television category were awarded before Mr. Ted Failon of

3. ABS-CBN's Failon Ngayon host. Focusing on “Television as Legacy Media Vs Social TV", like
Mr. Taberna, he narrates his work experiences, his struggles to reach who and where he is today
and how he fight corruption.
As to end the event, College of Communication Dean, Mrs. Edma Bernabe, said her final
piece and her closing remarks.
Though the whole event was successful-the third YCC and the first ever Mabini Media
Award- there are little things we should consider changing for a better amd more successful event.
Although it is practical to set the YCC at the Bulwagang Balagatas, it is still wiser if we held
to the original venue- AFP Theater. Bulwagan cannot accommodate massive occupants and
delegates from different colleges and universities. It is more applicable to have the AFP Theater as
a setting for another YCC. The third YCC only accommodates PUP students as the audience
which it should have been from different schools.
Also, Bulwagan is not that spacious, used monobloc chairs and some said that the
air-conditioning is poor. We should always treat our guest as important individuals and stick to
mind that whatever we do or say, it always reflects on who we are and our school. Using
monobloc chairs in an all day event may cause uncomfortabilites to the audiences plus the poor
air-conditioning that others claim. It will be good if the next venue is spacious enough, have
comfortable seats and good air-condition.

4. Another issue is that the absence of a keynote speaker. We should invite speaker who has free
or available for the time the seminar will takes place. It will be a waste of time for the audience if
the speaker cannot come, deliver and explain his speech specifically and clearly. In the firs place,
the main purpose of this congress is gain imformation and learns from their experiences.
Overall the whole event went good and successful despite those little issues.
