2. General information
Label launched in 1989.
Founded by Richard Russell, Tim
Palmer, Nick Halkes.
Originally started up to release rave
and dance music and as a offshoot of
Beggars Banquet records’ more
commercial dance label called
Citybeat.
Later broadened its musical horizons
after signing The Prodigy.
Like to release innovative new music.
3. How they work?
Like to break out new artists.
A independent label that puts out half
a dozen albums a year.
‘Anti-business philosophy’- quoted by
founder Richard Russell.
XL doesn’t take a risk on things that
could be successful, but they don’t
like.
Gives the artist a lot of control
because they believe the artist knows
how to make and market themselves.
4. Break music industry
rules by letting the artist
help make business
decisions.
Richard Russell views
things from the artist’s
point of view because
he was a DJ, producer
and a member of Kicks
Like a Mule.
The label make sure
they have a strong bond
with the artist.
5. Link to our song and video?
Although the label originally started out
as a label for dance and rave music, it
has changed over the years. So it now
releases music from all genres.
By it being a independent label it helps to
promote many indie artist, so this would
be good for our band.
It also releases pop artist such as Dizzie
Rascal so this would also be good for
our band.
Also I think because the label ensures it
has a good relationship with the artist it
would be good for our band.
