World War 2 was the bloodiest conflict in history caused by several factors. The Treaty of Versailles imposed harsh terms on Germany after WWI, fueling German resentment (Cause 1). Adolf Hitler took power in Germany in 1933 and secretly began rearming Germany in violation of the treaty (Cause 2). Britain and France pursued a policy of appeasement by allowing Germany's rearmament and annexation of territories, hoping to avoid war (Cause 3). This failed as Hitler's territorial demands grew. The League of Nations also failed to prevent the war as it lacked power and the ability to act quickly against aggressors (Cause 4).

The League of Nations has often been described by Historians and other social commentators as a failure of diplomacy. This set of slides will (hopefully) provide a balanced view of the League and what it hoped to achieve.

The war in Europe was a major turning point in 20th Century history. This lecture presentation makes use of existing material on the causes of the war and also helps students analyse some of the considerations that British and French leaders were looking at carefully and which ultimately led them down towards conflict with Hitler.

This is a very important topic in the history of the world......
-The League of Nations was to be an organization where representatives of the world´s Nations would meet settle their difference by discussion instead of war. It was founded in Geneva Switzerland in1919.
In 1918, The president of the United States Woodrow Wilson gave a speech with a special contribution called “The Fourteen Points”.
“Point # 14: A general association of nations must be formed under specific covenants to afford mutual guarantees of political independence and territorial integrity to great and small states alike”.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

5. CAUSE#1
The Treaty of Versailles
Lloyd George
England
Vittor Orlando
Italy
Georges Clemenceau
France
Woodrow Wilson
U.S
In 1919, these men met to discuss how Germany
was to be made to pay for the damage world war one had caused.
6. Germanyhad been expecting a treaty
based on Wilson's 14 points and were
not happy with the terms of the
Treaty of Versailles.
However, they had no choice but to
10. Hitler's Actions
Adolf Hitler became
Chancellor of Germany in Jan.1933.
Almost immediately he began
secretly
building up Germany's
army & weapons.
In 1934 HE increased the size of the army, began building warships and created a
German air force.Compulsory military service was also
introduced.
11.
12. Although Britain and France were
aware of Hitler's actions,
they were also concerned about the rise
of Communism
13. Cause #3
Failure of Appeasement
*Appeasement means giving in to someone
provided their demands are seen as
reasonable.
During the 1930s, many politicians in both Britain
and France came to see that the terms of the Treaty
of Versailleshad placedrestrictionsonGermany that were
unfair.
Hitler's actions were seen as understandable and justifiable.
14. Failure of Appeasement
When Germany began re-arming in 1934,
many politicians felt that Germany had a
right to re-arm in order to protect herself.
16. Failure of Appeasement
The most notable example of appeasement was
the Munich Agreement of September1938.
This Munich Agreement was generally viewed as a
triumph and an excellent example of securing
peace through negotiation
rather than war.
18. Cause#4
The League of Nations
This was an international organisation set up in 1919 to help keep
world peace.
It wasintendedthatall countries would bemembersof theLeagueand
that if there were disputes between countries they
could be settled by negotiation rather than by force.
If this failed then countries would stop trading with the
aggressive country and if that failed then countries
would use their armies to fight.
19. Failureof the League of the Nations
In theory the Leagueof Nations was a good idea and did have some early
successes. But ultimatelyit was a failure.
The main reasons for the failure of the League of Nations can be
summarised into the following points:
• Not all countries joinedthe League.
Other countries decided not to join and some joined but later left.
• The League hadno power.
The main weapon of the League was to ask member countries to
stop trading with an aggressive country. However, this did not work
because countries could still trade with non-member countries.
When the world was hit by depression in the late 1920s countries
were reluctant to lose trading partners to other non-member
countries.
20. • The League hadno army.
Soldiers were to be supplied by member countries. However, countries
were reluctant to get involved and risk provoking an aggressive
country into taking direct action against them and failed to provide
troops.
- Unableto act quickly.
The Council of the League of Nations only met four times a year
and decisions had to be agreed by all nations. When countries called
for the League to intervene, the League had to set up an emergency
meeting, hold discussions and gain the agreement of all members.
This process meant that the League could not act quickly to stop it.
