Dear Ma,
Progress Report on the Free Eye Examination/ Treatment and Allocation of Land Space
for building a Medical Center at Wumba Village on the 14th of April 2012
Federal Capital Territory and its environs are fast developing and the need for
sustained National development through Primary Healthcare is paramount.
Consequently, I, Dr. Adigwe Ifeoma Mary-Anne, a corp member at the Medical
Services Department with NYSC call-up number NYSC/BEN/2011/119968 and FCT
number FC/11B/6264 has keyed into this National vision. I have directed my energies
to sustain primary eye care and approval have been sort and granted to conduct a free
Eye Examination and Treatment at Wumba Village.

 Appendix
The Objective
The main objective of the project is to bring visual testing and treatment to the people
of Wumba village, FCT Abuja and also satisfy the need for a Health center at Wumba
by Land acquisition at a central location.
Consent and Approval
The consent of the State Coordinator NYSC Abuja and the Director Medical Services
Department, CBN Abuja, was sort to carry out the project. Approval for execution was
subsequently granted. In addition, the Chief of Wumba Village was consulted on the
proposed project and the consultations turned out very successful.
Project Plan
To successfully carry out the project, revenue was generated from individuals and
CBN staff provided the bulk of the fund. The project invested in banners, treatment
supplies; drugs, eye drops, glasses, testing equipments and paid medical personnel.
Sensitisation
Banners were printed to give direction to the venue of Eye Examination/Treatment.
These were mounted at strategic places within and outside the village to enhance
accessibility. The Chief also mobilised the youth to do a public announcement through
out the community. All these sensitization media impacted on a positive turn-out for
the exercise.
Commencement/Skill pool
The project started at about 9:00am with five Doctors, a Pharmacist and a records
Personnel. The turn up was highly impressive as the medical personnels received a
total number of 482 patients. The team worked for 5:00 hours at a stretch, took time
out for lunch and returned to work until about 4:30pm when the exercise was rounded
up.
Details of Patients Examined and Treated
 A total of 482 patients were seen including children
 380 were given Vitamin C tablets including those without abnormality
 213 had refractive errors but 200 were given spectacle prescriptions
 92 had ocular allergy and were all given antiallergic eye drops
 68 had ocular infections and all were given antibiotic eye drops
 37 had both allergy and infections and all were treated.

 23 had cloudy media and were treated.
 There were 6 cataract cases and 9 glaucoma suspects, all were referred to
General Hospitals.
Media Coverage
The activities of the project was covered by National Television Authority (NTA) and
African Independent Television (AIT).
Program Closure
The project came to an end at about 5:00pm. The Chief commended the team for their
unequivocal effort during the exercise and expressed his appreciation.
Brief on Land Acquisition Consultation Meeting
After the free Eye Examination/Treatment, I had a discussion with the Chief on the
need for a Medical Center in the Community which will make healthcare services
accessible to villagers and he promised to allocate a piece of land for the purpose.
After series of meeting with the elders and youth of the village, a piece of land was
allocated at the heart of Wumba for the Medical Center.
Issues & Challenges
Encountered Language barrier and treatment supplies were insufficient.
Prayer
In Conclusion, having successfully executed the one-off eye examinations and
treatment, I also appeal for the development of the piece of land mapped out for the
Medical Center to enable timely and adequate healthcare services in Wumba Village.
