The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a specialized UN agency dedicated to developing an international intellectual property system that rewards creativity and innovation. WIPO was established in 1967 and is headquartered in Geneva. The Paris Convention of 1883 was one of the first major international treaties to help people obtain IP protection in other countries for inventions, trademarks, and industrial designs. The Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement, negotiated in 1994, harmonizes and strengthens IP protection standards and enforcement at the national and international levels across copyrights, trademarks, geographical indications, patents, integrated circuit designs, and undisclosed information. TRIPS addresses the application of trading principles and dispute resolution.
