Creative technology combines creativity and technology to develop new solutions. It can be used to create better work, explore new markets, and make a real difference. Examples include BRCK, an affordable rugged laptop for harsh environments, Loon which aims to provide internet access to rural and remote areas using high-altitude balloons, and Folding@home which uses volunteer computing power to simulate protein folding and study diseases.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
Welcome everyoneGreat to see so many creative technologists in the roomThank you to everyone before meToday I want to give you my answer to the question: WTF …
I’m Joel – happiest man in mobile I used to work in games, for EA & Codemasters, now I work in mobile where I am at Somo – a mobile solutions company – leading the UK innovation teamI’ve always worked in, or very closely to development teams, and I have always been fascinated with technology (for Xmas I got a Dell PC in my room, I even used to own the PDA phones)
When asked to talk, I wasn’t truly confident I knew what a Creative Technologist was!If I was speaking to lots of people that were Creative Technologists, I wanted to make sure I was correctI asked a lot of friends, head of CT, Creative Technical Dir… One thing was clear – there is no definitive definition
As we’ve heard already, many Creative Technologists come from a development backgroundPushing the limits of software, finding hacks and work-aroundsWe know that some come from more of a design background – Murat for a startMost interesting to me is the third type – visionariesThis is more where I fitThis is like Steve Jobs – no coding background, no design background, just an appreciation for creativity and an understanding of technology
Whatever the background, we all share similarities…We have a hunger for ‘MORE’More knowledge, better use of a technology, ‘cool’ ideas…We focus on the future, and progression through technologyWhat’s next? What’s coming? What’s new?Whilst these qualities could be matched to anyone, I believe they are commonly found in Creative Technologists, as well as THIS
Most importantly to me is the marriage of the” left brain and right brain”Popular theory is that left brain is logical, right brain creativeFor me, this is what a Creative Technologist is all aboutUnderstanding emerging technologies (what’s coming and how it CAN work)Vision for human potential (how to apply these creatively to find new uses and solve a human problem)Using both sides of the brain, we CREATE
That’s my stab at what a Creative Technologist is. This is why I’m really talking today…Why should I care? It’s easy to get bogged down in the day to day of Creative Technology…
Agencies with good Creative Technologists produce better work…
Businesses with good Creative Technology understanding can flourish, and find new markets. Most importantly…
We can make a real differenceIt’s easy to forget that technology is not a ‘thing’Technology is simply a tool created by humans, in order to solve our problemsIt isn’t aliveIt doesn’t move without US moving it forward
I love this quote about why we love to make thingsEvery time we make something we are trying something out – successful or notWe are trying new thingsWe are helping technology move forward
When we look at the 3 rules of natural selection, we can identify with every oneUsing our unique left & right brains, we create numerous ideas, more than can surviveWe look at how a technology can be used millions of ways, giving our ideas varied traitsMost importantly, we learn from good ideas. We borrow good code. We continue upon a theme, building and building towards brilliant products built from the progress of others
And when it’s right, it’s right
BRCK is the ‘backup generator’ for the internetDesigned for Africa, famously poorly connectedThis is a brilliant example of a good understanding of not particularly new technology being applied creatively to a human problem
Loon is fucking nutsAgain, aimed at providing internet access to the developing world, Loon is a network of balloons that broadcast internet to hard to reach places around the worldFantastically creative solution to a technical issueThis brings all the internet’s education to people previously with no access to the internet
Folding@home is a brilliant program I have been a huge fan of for about 5 yearsA network of distributed computing, small packets of information are sent to idle computers to contribute to life-changing research on cancel, alzheimers, and Parkinson’sThe most obvious technical solution for this could have been ‘build a super computer’, but with creative thinking we arrive at a much better goal
So I just wanted to remind you all that whatever you do individually, at agencies, start-ups, whatever, you are all part of this progression – share a blog post, git hub, a meetupI believe creative technical thinking is THE future, and I am proud we are all here now
