BACKGROUND AND TEACHING STRATEGIES
Communication in health and social Care is a key aspect necessary for building the right relationships
and for ensuring that all service users are able to access the appropriate support required to meet
their various needs. This unit aims to develop learner’s awareness of the different forms of
communication used in the health and social care context and the importance of communication in
service delivery.
Comprehensive exploration of the themes and theories in Health and Social Care will be carried out
as well as identifying the various forms of communications systems and any legal frameworks
surrounding gathering and recording of information about people through classroom discussion,
projects, tutorials, group activities and case studies will be undertaken. These will be applied to real
life contexts to ensure the practicability of the themes and theories identified.
Learning outcomes and assessment criteria
The learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the module are shown below. The case studies
will cover learning outcomes one or two. Assignment one will meet the criteria for learning outcomes
three. Tasks outlined in the case study and assignment should indicate the pathway to the
achievement of a pass outcome.

CASE STUDY
Bill Peterson is a 79yrs old man and has been hospitalised for the last 3 months after a severe stroke.
He has spent one month in a rehabilitation centre and is due to return home at the end of the week.
He knows he will need a great deal of support as well as his wife. Bill has developed communication
difficulties as a result of his stroke and will require a plan of care services to enable him live a full and
independent life style. Bill’s wife is a plasticising Muslim and is going to be his primary carer. She has
very minimal English language skills and is not very literate. you are Bills care manager working for a
local care agency, discuss the following:
 Discuss the relevant theories of communication and how this is applicable to Bill’s situation

 What would you offer Bill and his family in terms of additional support in communication?
This task will meet outcome criteria 1.1.2
 How might bill’s communication difficulty affect Bill’s personal opinion of himself?

organization and which requires input from outside organization and agencies.
 Prepare and organize such activities detailing any communication/health and safety

 Indicate how you have resolved the issues, including any methods, techniques used.
 Indicate the sources of your activities and how you identified them.
 Present your findings in appropriate format.
