Module 03 – Physical Characteristics of Planets
The planets of the Solar System can be divided into two major classes, terrestrial and Jovian planets, but each planet has their own interesting characteristics. With the Stellarium planetarium software, you can get a close up view of the planets and see their features for yourself.
Background Question – Describe three characteristics of a planet that you think you could measure from visual observations.
Object: Explain the purpose of this laboratory assignment in your own words. What do you think you will accomplish or learn from this exercise?
Hypothesis: Write a simple hypothesis connected to planetary features that you will be able to test using the Stellarium software (for example, Jovian planets have faster rotation period than terrestrial planets)
Procedure:
1) Open the Stellarium software. Open the location window (F6) and change the planet to the Sun. This will change our observing location to the center of our Solar System.
2) Open the Sky and Viewing options window (F4). Under the “Sky” tab, uncheck the Atmosphere, Stars, and Dynamic eye adaption. Check “Show planet markers” and “Show planet orbits”.
3) Select the Landscape tab and uncheck “Show ground”.
4) Open the Search window (F3) and enter in Mercury. The view should shift such that the Mercury is in the center of the screen. As long as Mercury is actively select, it will remain in your field of view as you advance time.
5) In the table below, make note of the visible features of Mercury. This can include over color, surface features such as craters or ice caps, presence of an atmosphere and cloud structure, and any visible moons orbiting the planet. You can also advance time and try to observe in the planet has a faster or slow rotation.
6) Repeat your observer with each of the eight planets. You can use the Search window (F3) to shift your view to each planet.

Part I. Structure of the Sun
We'll start by looking at the solar interior more closely. Study the materials you'll find at the
Solar Interior
If you enlarge the image (by clicking on it), it shows you the various layers of the Sun. You can use this image along with your textbook to draw and label your diagram with both the inner and outer layers of the Sun.
Hand draw a diagram of the Sun on the Structure of the Sun Diagram, and label each of the layers (which should include: core, radiation zone, convection zone, photosphere, chromosphere, corona). Take an image of this to insert it into your lab report.
Now use the website to read about what is occurring in each layer, and how we know this information.
In your lab report below your inserted drawing, type a brief (1 or 2 sentences) description in your own words of what’s happening in each layer. Be sure to include all of the layers included in the interior and atmosphere of the Sun.
Part 2. Using Sunspots to Measure Solar Rotation
In 1611 Galileo first looked at the Sun with his telescope and was surprised to view several dark blemishes on its surface which came to be known as “Sunspots." Upon additional observations Galileo was able to determine that these sunspots were moving across the Sun’s surface indicating that the Sun, like the Earth, was rotating on its axis. The rate that sunspots move across the Sun’s surface can be used to determine the velocity of the Sun’s rotation.

are solar images for six consecutive days of several sunspot groups moving across the surface of the Sun taken by a NASA solar satellite known as SOHO, Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. You will be tracking three of these groups with this part of the activity. Sunspot group 1731 (near the equatorial area to the far left of the April 25th image), Sunspot group 1728 (above and to the right of Group 1731), & Sunspot Group 1730 (below and to the right of group 1731).

In your typed lab report, clearly label all of your answers to the following questions. For any calculations below, be sure to show all of you work and not just the end answer. Make sure your worded answers are in full sentences. Any data in tables should be typed.
Identify and mark the same sunspot groups on each image (for the larger sunspot groups draw a circle around the whole group and mark a dot at the center of the circle as a reference point for your measurements). Sometimes, if you want to understand how nature truly works, you need to break things down to the simplest levels imaginable. The macroscopic world is composed of particles that are-if you divide them until they can be divided no more-fundamental. They experience forces that are determined by the exchange of additional particles (or the curvature of spacetime, for gravity), and react to the presence of objects around them. At least, that’s how it seems. The closer two objects are, the greater the forces they exert on one another. If they’re too far away, the forces drop off to zero, just like your intuition tells you they should. This is called the principle of locality, and it holds true in almost every instance. But in quantum mechanics, it’s violated all the time. Locality may be nothing but a persistent illusion, and seeing through that facade may be just what physics needs.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
