This assignment teaches you how art historians conduct
basic fieldwork in museums and archival research in libraries.
The situation:
As a young scholar interested in China’s pictorial traditions, you have been invited to
submit a short article to the Art Bulletin1 for publication consideration in a volume of
essays produced by college students about a pictorial work of Chinese art (that is, one that
is a painting, or has a significant pictorial aspect, such as an incised stone tablet with a
scene containing figures or landscapes). You will select a topic, develop a motivating
question about it, conduct research to find the answers for your question, and then write
up your findings in a well organized and thoughtfully argued paper.
Topic choices
1. Study an image that was not discussed in class. Discuss it in terms of one of the

This assignment teaches you how art historians conduct
basic fieldwork in museums and archival research in libraries.
The situation:
As a young scholar interested in China’s pictorial traditions, you have been invited to
submit a short article to the Art Bulletin1 for publication consideration in a volume of
essays produced by college students about a pictorial work of Chinese art (that is, one that
is a painting, or has a significant pictorial aspect, such as an incised stone tablet with a
scene containing figures or landscapes). You will select a topic, develop a motivating
question about it, conduct research to find the answers for your question, and then write
up your findings in a well organized and thoughtfully argued paper.

Visiting a Museum
It makes sense to approach a museum the way a seasoned traveler approaches visiting a city for the first time. Find out what there is available to see. In the museum, find out what sort of exhibitions are currently housed in the museum and start with the exhibits that interest you.
If there is a travelling exhibition, it’s always a good idea to see it while you have the chance. Then, if you have time, you can look at other things in the museum.
Every effort should be made ahead of time to identify a museum that has items and works one can easily connect to our HUM 111 class and book. Since HUM 111 covers from ancient times to the 1500s AD, it makes more sense to focus on items from that time frame. In general, museums with artistic cultural artifacts and fine arts work better than history museums.
Any questions about whether a museum-visit activity fits the course and assignment well enough will be decided by the instructor when the student seeks approval for the activity. Any alternative activity outside the normal ones listed here, such as for those limited by disability or distance, will be determined by the instructor. Generally, we do not expect students to travel over an hour to get to an approved activity.
Take notes as you go through the museum and accept any handouts or pamphlets that the museum staff gives you. While you should not quote anything from the printed material when you do your report, the handouts may help to refresh your memory later.
The quality of your experience is not measured by the amount of time you spend in the galleries or the number of works of art that you actually see. The most rewarding experiences can come from finding two (2) or three (3) pieces of art or exhibits which intrigue you and then consi.

The police were following Sally, whom they previously identified as seeking to hire someone to murder her husband. She met an undercover police officer in an Internet chat room and offered him $5,000 to kill her husband. They arranged to meet at the restaurant for the exchange of money. Sally was supposed to meet the undercover police officer, whom she never saw before, at the restaurant and ask if he was available and wink. The undercover officer was supposed to say that yes, he was available and wink back at her. She would then order a dry martini with three olives, and the undercover officer would order the same thing. Sally did not know that she picked the wrong man at the restaurant, and instead of giving the money to the undercover officer, she gave the money to Mr. Assin.
You own a private investigation firm that specializes in conducting retained or court-appointed criminal investigations for criminal defense attorneys like the one who represents Mr. Assin. This is the first time that you have worked for this attorney, so you want to show him that you know the law and the criminal justice field. You assure Mr. Assin and the attorney that your information will be accurately assessed with the explanation of the events which occurred as outlined above. Your job is to conduct an independent criminal assessment of what happened to Mr. Assin, based upon the facts outlined above, and provide the attorney with your analysis of the case against Mr. Assin.

You will be curating a small exhibition of artworks that are conceptually related. You will write
at least
a 500-word curatorial essay/statement explaining your research and exhibition.
1. The essay should be at least 500 words, double-spaced, MLA format.
2. The initial paragraph should establish the overall premise of the exhibit, the main theme or concept the show.
3. The middle paragraphs should describe detailed aspects about 4 of the 10 artworks. Describe what they have in common and how they each illustrate the overall theme of the show.
4. In the final paragraph, suggest the wider significance of your theme. Describe what you learned from putting the show together and/or what you hope the viewer takes away from the exhibit.
5. As with any persuasive essay, think about your audience and any counter-arguments or opinions to your ideas and address one of them in some way.
6. Include within your document a page or two with images of all 10 of the artworks in the exhibit. For each image, include the artwork’s title, artist name or culture, media, and year of execution.

Note:
Submit your cultural activity choice to the instructor for approval before the end of Week 5 (earlier is even better). Look for guidance from the instructor for how or where to make your proposal. You may also seek advice from your instructor (provide your town/state or zip code) for a good activity in your general area.
Visiting a Museum
It makes sense to approach a museum the way a seasoned traveler approaches visiting a city for the first time. Find out what there is available to see. In the museum, find out what sort of exhibitions are currently housed in the museum and start with the exhibits that interest you.
If there is a travelling exhibition, it’s always a good idea to see it while you have the chance. Then, if you have time, you can look at other things in the museum.
Every effort should be made ahead of time to identify a museum that has items and works one can easily connect to our HUM 111 class and book. Since HUM 111 covers from ancient times to the 1500s AD, it makes more sense to focus on items from that time frame. In general, museums with artistic cultural artifacts and fine arts work better than history museums.
Any questions about whether a museum-visit activity fits the course and assignment well enough will be decided by the instructor when the student seeks approval for the activity. Any alternative activity outside the normal ones listed here, such as for those limited by disability or distance, will be determined by the instructor. Generally, we do not expect students to travel over an hour to get to an approved activity.
Take notes as you go through the museum and accept any handouts or pamphlets that the museum staff gives you. While you should not quote anything from the printed material when you do your report, the handouts may help to refresh your memory later.
The quality of your experience is not measured by the amount of time you spend in the galleries or the number of works of art that you actually see. The most rewarding experiences can come from finding two (2) or three (3) pieces of art or exhibits which intrigue you and then consi.

You own a private investigation firm that specializes in conducting retained or court-appointed criminal investigations for criminal defense attorneys like the one who represents Mr. Assin. This is the first time that you have worked for this attorney, so you want to show him that you know the law and the criminal justice field. Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too.
