3. Be a Listener or Speaker?
It’s More Beneficial to be a Listener
How effective are you in your
interactions? Do people listen to you carefully?
Do people usually agree with you? Do you
have misunderstandings with others?
Now, ask yourself one more question: Do
you prefer to be a speaker or a listener in
communication?
Your answer is important. A typical study
points out that people generally spend about 9
percent of communication time in writing, 16
percent in reading, 30 percent in speaking,
and 45 percent in listening. Listening is a
really significant element in communication
because you can actually have much more
effective interactions with others by learning
to be a better listener.
Listeners as receivers can gather
information in communication. While
listening to other people, listeners are
collecting data about the "who," "what,"
"when," "where" and "why" of a situation.
Good listeners can ask relevant follow-up
questions and get to the main point of the
conversation easily. Listeners can also be
more prepared to take on the role of speaker
after gathering information from one or more
individuals.
For example, good listeners make
observations on a speaker’s age, gender,
education level, religion, language and
cultural background, all of which will be
helpful when listeners become speakers. Good
listeners can use this to judge how to best
reach their audience when speaking. Listening
prudently to others for information and
indicators about beliefs, value, and emotions
can help you avoid offending others.
In addition, listeners can give feedback to
show their respect for speakers. You might be
curious about how to give feedback as a
listener. Research shows about 85 percent of
what we communicate is nonverbal. This
includes our posture, physical movements,
eye contact and our mental focus. For
example, to invite and encourage expression,
you, as a listener, can incline your posture
toward the speaker. This shows the speaker
you were paying attention to them, and may
encourage them to listen carefully when you
are talking.!
The traditional Chinese character for
“listening” emphasizes that good listening is
not only related to the use
of ears. The diagram
attached shows how the
words for eyes, heart,
undivided attention, and ears, are all
incorporated into the character for listening.
Good listeners must remember to gather
information through their ears, eyes, and heart,
and give feedback through eye contact, and
remember the most important thing is that
they pay attention all the time.
If you want people to listen to you
carefully, agree with you more, and avoid
misunderstandings, remember to be a good
listener. When you are listening carefully, you
will be able to better gather information, be
prepared, give feedback, and avoid offences
to make the conversation more effective.
Listen more; speak less, because you will
learn more!

Dear Editor:
I’m Bonnie Zhang, a senior from Michigan State University (MSU). I’m an international
student at MSU, and I was really struggling my freshman year to get over culture shock and
adjust to this new environment. I think MSU needs to do more things to help international
students adapt.
More and more international students are now studying abroad in the United States.
Michigan State University has a huge group of international students. It’s hard for international
students, especially freshmen, to find someone to help them get used to American culture.
I think giving international students an American e-pen pal would be very helpful.
Communicating by email or text messages is especially appropriate for busy college students
who would find it hard to figure out a time to meet with each other. International students can
find answers for their cultural confusions from an American e-pen pal.
I would love to see this issue covered in the State News. If you are interested in discussing
more details for this plan, please reach me at the phone number or email below. I will follow up
with you by email if I have not heard from you soon. Thanks for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Bonnie

8. More Technology, Less Love
Don’t let technology block your love
“We all live with a community of people,
not with a community of technology”, said
Sherry Turkle, the author of Alone Together.
In our society, technology is developing
at high-speeds. Somehow, technology makes
our lives convenient, yet it also makes our
lives have more distance and less love. We
use technical machines to contact each other
everyday rather than meet one other face to
face. We can contact others more often
through technology, but we seldom see others
directly. If we lose our cellphones for a
couple of days we will lose all interactions
with others, and we might feel abandoned.
Now, people cannot do anything without
cellphones. Texting is a way of contacting
others, but it still cannot replace face-to-face
conversation. We can get information from
messages, but we cannot feel the exact
emotion by texting on the phone. That’s
because we not only get information from
words, but also can gather information from a
person’s tone, eye contact and even gestures.
If we cannot feel others emotion directly, it
will be hard to feel care and love from each
other. With a lack of face-to-face talking, it
will be difficult for people to express their
ideas or feelings. People might also miss out
on meeting new people when busy on a
cellphone, so that you will miss out on a great
new relationship with someone in the same
surroundings as you. This will cause a kind of
degeneration for humans and make people
live with less love.
“Why didn’t the museum use a robot
tortoise instead of the real tortoise?” children
asked when they saw an authentic Galapagos
tortoise at the American Museum of Natural
History. Sherry Turkle mentioned this story in
her book Alone Together. As we can see,
technology has become so ever present that
right now kids expect to see it everywhere,
including seeing robot tortoises instead of real
tortoises in the museum. The author states that
some even want to have a robot tortoise as a
pet instead of a real tortoise. In my opinion,
robot animals can’t have emotions, and are
still not real. It is true, with robot pets, we
don't need to feed them food or water. They
will never get sick, so we don’t need take
them to see a doctor, and we don’t even have
to take care of them a lot. That may sound
great, but that’s because with robot pets we
just have a new technical machine in our
home, not a real pet. Real pets have emotions
and they give deep responses. Pets will truly
be happy when their owners play with them or
give them treats, and you can feel their honest
happiness for sure. If you love your real pets
you can also feel your pets’ real love.
Although people may have fewer bother with
robot pets, they will never feel the same love
from robot pets.
Technology seems like it makes our
lives easier and more convenient, but
something cannot be replaced. Think carefully
about what you are missing when choosing to
use technology. Don’t let technology block
your love.

helping of the chain’s famous Pumpkin Cheesecake.
