The document discusses issues faced by newcomers in Canada and proposed actions to address them. It conducted research including interviews with newcomer agencies, an online survey, and visits to newcomer centers. The main barriers identified were language skills, lack of funding and resources, invalidated education, and lack of employment. To raise awareness and support, the group proposed creating posters and pamphlets, using social media, writing letters, fundraising, and volunteering. The overall goal was to help newcomers with their smooth transition in Canada.
2. Advocating funding for newcomers in Canada to
provide more resources for smooth transition.
3. Canada is a multicultural country. People are
coming from different cultural backgrounds with
different values, beliefs, and identities.

5. As a group we visited the Newcomers centre
in Malvern to try and get an understanding
of the supports available and how they go
about making these services known.
Not all the support services are offered right
at there center's. They direct Newcomers to
different locations where they can get the
specific support/supports they need.
6. Funding is a HUGE issue
Language barriers
Education:They are part of theTDSB so for
children they at this centre directly help
parents enroll them in schools.
Some resources people feel embarrassed to
access.
7.
8. As well we visited the Afghan Women’s
Organization continually tried to get an
more information to the support our
advocate topic.
Basically, the organization works for new
coming women in Canada. They also provide
link classes which is for both for men and
women. They have two branches one in
Mississauga and another is in Scarborough.
9. They faced some issues while providing services for
newcomers such as
Lack of funding, government cut down their 40%
cost from last year. Therefore, they could not hire
more teachers from different language
backgrounds.
They need more volunteer workers to help
newcomers for link classes.
They also feel that most of the newcomers do not
know about their services, and they are trying to do
some outreach, which is not enough.

12. Complex health insurance eligibility and
entitlement rules
Limited pre-arrival health care
Limited Language and literacy skills
Lack of familiarity with the Canadian
healthcare system
Precarious finances
Factors related to gender and culture
13. Concluding our researches, the followings are
the main barriers for newcomers in Canada:
Language skills
Not enough Funding
Lack of Resources
Invalidation of education backgrounds
Lack of Employment opportunity
14. Since we had done so much research about the issues and
stress that newcomers are facing, it is time to take actions!
We believe all together, we can make a change!
Help raising up awareness, fight for funding and resources!

16. People come and go, rush to work
or school like we all do. Not
everyone really has time to stay
and learn about the missions of our
advocate.
We considered the difficulty of
raising up the awareness in a limit
of time.
Therefore, we decided to use
posters to catch people’s attentions
as we post them up in the campus
and public areas.
17. • Although posters may not
contain all the information
or researches, it can help
catching people’s
attention while they do
not have time or patience
to read a whole piece of
passage.
18. We wish using posters
can help to attract
audiences and get
interested in our
advocate.
19. To effectively bring our
message to the audiences,
first thing we need to do is
educating the public in a
simplest but most straight
forward method.
Delivering pamphlets is
always a convenient and
direct way to send out our
messages.
20. All of which aims to help
people understand, raise
up awareness of our topic
and convince others to
take part in the advocate.
Also, provide information
of agencies to people are
seeking for help.
21. Living in the
multimedia society, it is
important for us to
getting information
online.
Facebook is large online
social media which has
more than one billion
users all over the world.
It spreads out messages
quickly and people
getting information fast.
22. Our Facebook Page has
164 followers which
include people from
different countries.
We have posted all the
information from the
Statement to Action Plans
to increase their
awareness to support
newcomers
We wish to use this
common online social
community to spread the
information out and
encourage people to take
an action to support
newcomers.
23. What is petition?
A formal written request,
typically one signed by
many people, appealing to
authority with respect to a
particular cause.
Make a petition to prove a
point. When people sign
it, that's saying that they
agree with what you say.
24. Petition is a legal
instrument (form)
Especially a
respectful or humble
request
Request, that is
addressed to a
person or group of
persons in authority
or power
25. Why fundraising?
Obviously, the answer to this
question would be money.
Many people may think; newcomers
must come with money. Even if they
are not rich, surely they won’t be too
poor. However, it is not necessary!
In facts, people come to this country
with different backgrounds,
experiences and identities. Some of
them may carry burdens more than
we can ever imagine. To survive, they
need funding from organizations and
the government.

26. YMCA newcomers settlement
program provides a variety of
comprehensive and wide
ranging services to newcomers
who need help.
Therefore, we contacted the
supervisor of the department
and see if we can hold big sale
to help gather donation.
There we go!
27. The big sale went well
as we successfully
gathered $150 during
almost two hours of
fundraising!
28. We prepared a comment
board for people to put
their opinions, feelings and
experiences about what
newcomers.
29. It was a great and unforgettable experience!Although the donation wasn’t a big
amount of money but we wish that can help raise up public’s attention of
newcomers’ issues.
30. H International students find it
difficult to access to the
services and consultation at
the campus.The following are
some of the issues:
Limited information/
resources
Long waiting lines
Lack of staff
Work permit application
To fight for more resources,
we wrote a letter to the
international department.
31. Our final action plan
We contacted AfghanWomen’s
Organization to see if there was any
volunteer position we can help with
We were arranged to help delivering
pamphlets and flyers. All of which aimed
to help raise up the awareness of issues
that newcomers are facing.
32. The following organizations are aimed to help newcomers
settle down in Canada
