Abu Laith al-Libi must have been feeling comfortable as he relaxed and had tea
with his battle staff in a small hut inside Pakistan’s North Waziristan region. A
local commander of Al-Qaeda who had led terrorist operations for more than a
decade, he dressed simply, with baggy salwar-kameez clothes, a cotton turban,
and a Kalashnikov rifle not far from his side. When a Hellfire missile from a
Predator drone tore through the building, his last thought surely must have been,
“How did they spot me?”
Identifying terrorists on the battlefield is relatively simple. My scout-sniper school
instructor always reminded us of a solid truism that applies perfectly both in
Afghanistan and Iraq—shoot the one with the gun. The same cannot be said of
the world’s most dangerous terrorists—the ones operating covertly inside the
United States and Europe. They are an entirely different matter.
Hunting them down is more akin to finding Soviet spies during the Cold War. It
requires an educated, deeply institutionalized counterintelligence apparatus that
relies on experts to perform detailed groundwork intended to study, stalk, and
expose enemy operations.
Since the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, however, the United States has
taken the opposite approach. From securing airports and airliners with massive
influxes of technology, to centralizing border and port security under the
Department of Homeland Security, to the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, the
current U.S. strategy prioritizes gizmos, bureaucracy, and bombing runs over the
simple training of Arabic-speaking intelligence officers or targeting the forces that
bind extremists together. And, by focusing on hard power, it has destroyed many
chances to do it right.
Terrorist cells are already well ahead of our ability to detect them. They are being
schooled in combat skills in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and
Yemen. They are mastering the art of infiltration, of mixing into communities very
different from their own. They are acquiring a wide range of internationalizing
skills, including excellent command of the English language and proficiency in
operating computers, mobile phones, and satellite Internet connections.
This level of intelligence and sophistication makes them unprecedented in the
history of terrorism. But, perhaps more importantly, they are “mission motivated”

to the core—they will gladly get close to their enemy and joyously die beside
them.

Microsoft Word, it seems, does not “get” the language of these speakers and attacks the black-and-white text with its red pen. For Microsoft Word, these writers are wrong.
When I first encountered “computer-mediated language” (Crystal

: 238), I was as confused as my word-processing program is today. An English teacher and one of our school's “grammar gurus,” I couldn't understand why students were substituting “2” for “too” or “u” for “you” in their school writing. I was completely stumped by the language they were using to talk to each other digitally. Today, when I look at the exchange between Lily and Michael, I am amazed by their ability to manipulate language and to communicate effectively across time and space. I have evolved from being a grammar guru who questioned this teen language as a degradation of Standard English to one who sees adolescent digitalk as a complex and fascinating combination of written and conversational languages in a digital setting.
The Journey of a “Grammar Guru”
I first ventured beyond e-mail into other forms of digital communication a decade ago when my brother installed an instant-messaging program on my personal computer. He taught me how to “see” him online and to exchange messages. A few years later, I used a similar instant-messaging program to “chat” with group members as we completed a class project for graduate school. Our inability to find a time for five adults to meet in person led us to use this technology, and our success in working together in a virtual space made me consider the pedagogical applications of instant messaging in my high school classroom.
When I first assigned a book discussion to be conducted by instant message (IM), my high school students looked at me quizzically. They hadn't thought about using IM as a learning tool. For them, it was a social space outside of scho.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

- 1. write a summary of the following text (APA) Despite being on the U.S. radar and the groundwork being laid for what would become Al Qaeda during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan during the 1970s and 1980s, they were not considered a household name until after the morning of September 11, 2001. Al Qaeda’s leader was well known to the U.S. government. For nearly 10 years, the United States attempted to locate the organization’s figurehead in hopes of toppling Al Qaeda. In May 2011, seal team six entered a compound in Pakistan believed to be where Osama bin Laden was living. During this successful mission, bin Laden was killed. Despite the death of Osama bin Laden, Al Qaeda did not readily disappear. As a result of a well-structured yet fractured organization, Al Qaeda is able to continue to recruit, train, and plan new attacks using the deaths as a propaganda and recruitment tool. Despite perceptions, Al Qaeda is actually a very tech savvy organization and uses the media to further advance its cause. Through the use of technology Al Qaeda is able to generate membership and spread propaganda. Another advantage for Al Qaeda is their ability to adapt. They now seem to recruit younger persons to propel their cause. While already considered decentralized and not confined to any specific border, technology allows them the ability to be truly global. In addition to the ability to use the Internet as a recruitment tool, the cyber world can also be used for fundraising. Whether they fundraise through means of charities or illicit sales, the Internet provides a wider reach and anonymity. While recruitment and fundraising are part of their goals, technology has also made training easier for new recruits. The Al Qaeda magazine, Inspire, has become a terrorist how-to manual. The web allows for easy accessibility in order to learn how to successfully make and detonate a bomb and carry out any other planned attacks. Al Qaeda also uses the internet to profile potential targets, target specific groups or individuals, and for command and control
- 2. mechanisms. The war on terror has lasted for roughly 12 years already with no end in sight. Al Qaeda and their affiliates have shown their willingness to adapt and change no matter the cost. Their patience has shown that they should not be underestimated or ruled out despite the death of bin Laden. The United States must continue to think outside the box in order to counter Al Qaeda’s threats.
