Write a essay. - Cultural patrimony (an object with cultural, historic, or traditional importance to a certain group or nation) is an ongoing subject of debate with culturally significant works of art collected in museums across the globe and far from their place of origin. Works of art have long been prized during wars and colonization as the rightful reward of the victors and most often without the consent of the vanquished. Do these circumstances of ownership become part of the history of an object thus endowing it with universal significance or do individual countries have the right to have works returned on the basis of national identity? Countries seeking the return (or repatriation) of their cultural patrimony have done so with and without success. Ideas of ownership have changed over time and since the 1970’s organizations like UNESCO ( click here to go to their website) have established international laws to protect works of art and antiquities from looting and destruction. Nevertheless, cases that predate these rules are often difficult to prove. Once a work has been in a museum collection for centuries should it be considered a part of a greater world heritage despite the unsavory means with which it might have been collected? Or do the national interests of individual countries and their feelings of injustice outweigh this consideration, thus giving primacy to a specific cultural inheritance over a universal one? This topic will ask you to explore these questions, among others, in a 4 page essay discussing the case of the Parthenon sculptures – aka The Elgin Marbles - Your argument will be based on scholarly research using the online databases on the library website as well as relevant books in the collection. INTRODUCTION
In 1907 the English manufacturer Royal Doulton introduced porcelainfeaturing a design called “Maori
Art”: cups, saucers and plates glazed
with red, black, and white to reproduce
a suite of interlocking patterns that are
generically known as “koru.” From the
1930s similar patterns have appeared on
New Zealand postage stamps, and the
koru is currently employed in a decora-
tive border on the two-dollar coin. Since
the 1960s Air New Zealand has ferried
people around the country and the
globe, a koru design on its tail and until
the late 1970s plastic tiki given to every
passenger. In 1985 packets of New
Zealand butter included a small graphic
which told consumers a portion of the
purchase price was going to support the
America’s Cup Campaign in
Freemantle, Australia. That graphic was
a blue and yellow triangle containing a
series of alternating bar-stop figures de-
rived from the mature style of the mod-
ernist New Zealand painter Gordon
Walters; his style, in turn, was based on
a geometric version of the koru. Cur-
rently, numerous Government depart-
ments have stylized koru or Maori weav-
ing-derived patterns in their letterheads,
and tourists clamor for Maori art prod-
ucts made both in New Zealand and
overseas. Fashion houses, both at home
and abroad, have appropriated Maori
design as modish. It appears painted on
the faces of famous men adorning the
covers of fashion magazines, or as part
of a global advertising campaign for a
sporting goods manufacturer. It enters
the world of the pop music market
through a tattoo on Robbie Williams’ left
shoulder by Maori tattooist Te Rangitu
Netana. Maori intellectual property
would seem from this to be global—cer-
tainly it is more widely and more casu-
ally received than it has been in the past.
In this same year, 2002, Te Waka Toi
(the Maori-funding arm of the national
arts funding agency) launched “Toi Iho”
a Maori-made mark, which is intended

authorship of products and as a quality
mark. In addition, the Waitangi Tribunal
(the national body established to hear
claims arising out of New Zealand’s 1840
Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi
signed between the Crown and many
Maori iwi) is still hearing evidence in one
of the most complex claims likely to
come before it: the Wai.262 claim on
Matauranga Maori (knowledge) and
Taonga Maori (treasures). Unlike previ-
ous claims, which have focussed on real
property or specific resource rights, this

Module 3 presents two cultures of the Aegean: the Minoans of Crete, and the Mycenaean people on the Greek mainland. The rarity of written evidence from this period forces historians to rely on architectural remains and artifacts to interpret the cultures. We will do the same.
Two vibrant Aegean civilizations existed that were concurrent with Middle and New Kingdom Egypt. These were the cultures of the Minoans, based on the large island of Crete (c.1900-c.1450), and the Mycenaean people, based on today’s mainland Greece (c.1600-c.1100 BCE). These were not Greeks, but pre-Greek peoples. Very few written records survive, and so we do not have the same full picture of history here that we do for the Egyptians. Archaeological evidence, however, shows these cultures to be prosperous groups whose wealth was based on seafaring trade.
Late 19th and early 20th century digs have uncovered important citadel or palace complexes related to these groups. For the Minoans, the text concentrates on the Palace of Knossos on Crete. This labyrinthine structure included living quarters, mercantile areas, courtyards, a processional corridor, theaters and religious spaces. Surviving wall paintings have an informal, even playful quality. Pottery, an important art and export item, show painted motifs whose curling, free-floating forms derive from sea life and other nature subjects.
For the Mycenaean culture, the text concentrates on the hilltop site of Mycenae, for which this culture is named. Here, you will find massive defensive walls, evidence of palace architecture, and shaft graves which held gold funerary masks and decorative items of wealth, incorporating the same playful Minoan imagery.
In this module, you will also be introduced to the Greeks. These people migrated onto the Greek peninsula between 1200 and 1100 BCE, ending Mycenaean dominance there. History is sparce for several hundred years, but a strong Greek culture emerged around 800 BCE. We saw how important tradition and persistent conventions were to the Egyptians. The Greek culture contrasts with this traditionalism by embracing experimentation and exploration in everything from political systems, to philosophical ideas, to empirical science. Competition between the separate Greek city states helped spur on their seemingly modern notion of progress. In art, we also see experimentation and evolution of style. In this module, we can focus on pottery alone to see rapid style changes that form a traceable, linear progression. The four Greek pottery phases are Geometric, Orientalizing, Black Figure and Red Figure. Each style presents beautiful representation of Greek myths and legends, along with athletic events and secular Greek life.

The main purpose of museum is to neither educate nor entertain but rather to create a memory bank that would remind us of the past. Most societies in different parts of the world traced their origin through the works of arts history. All across the world there are hundreds of museums filled with history, information, shows, and famous documents. A variety of museums display interesting objects. A mix of cultures, historical events, famous people, and art work in the whole museum. Rather than having different attractions, some museums are dedicated to showing of shows based on a particular topic of history or interest for example the National Museum.
Upon going for an exhibition at one of the national museums, the experience I gained was very valuable and important on the understanding of the artworks used by the early humans . The visual experience gained during the exhibition was more appealing compared to reading of the curatorial essay about the exhibition at the museum which was entitled the The American Early Plates. The visual experience gives a visitor the chance to physically interact with artifacts especially when one can touch the artifacts. The curator essay about the exhibition in the museum had a lot of significance in understanding the artifacts used in the exhibition. The curatorial essay gave me the knowledge of understanding the origin, uses and dates of the various artifacts I visually witnessed at the museum. In general the visiting of the museum exhibit gave me a valuable experience as demonstrated.
The exhibition made me understand that a museum is an institution housing collections of objects of artistic, historic, or scientific interest and displayed for the educational and enjoyment of the public. I also noticed that Museums are places of memory that provides the link of distant past to the present generation which also help the society to know the path their forebears trod. The visit of the exhibition gave me the understanding of the artifacts in the display for example the display of an artifact referred to as the American earliest plate
The exhibition gave visitors the experience of comparing the modern American plates and those used in the early days. The exhibition gave the visitors a great chance to know the improvements the materials presented at the exhibition have undergone over time and the factors that have triggered such improvements. The visitors were also able learn history behind the making such of plates, the skills for making such plates and their relevance in those days.
In conclusion special exhibition helps one understand that museums are trustworthy, the importance of various artifacts to aid in the reconstruction of history. One is also able to compare the artifacts in museum with related objects which are currently in use. The importance of museum to hold a special exhibition for various artifacts is also understood.

OVERVIEW
World History is an incredibly broad subject and we will just scratch the surface of some key historical events, figures, religions, and ideas; however, each of us has ancestors from around the world and this assignment focuses on our relationship to them and our past.
This assignment is designed for you to practice research on the web and locate Primary and Secondary Sources. Additionally we are developing several course competencies including acquiring information, breaking multiple sources down into parts, use of library resources, recognizing secondary sources and locating primary sources.
Be sure you understand the difference between Primary Sources and Secondary Sources when researching history by visiting the resources page and visiting websites that describe the difference, such as the Canadian Collections, a site provided by the Canadian Government.
INSTRUCTIONS
Step I: Select the culture of one of your earliest known ancestors. (For example, are you German, African, Japanese, Chinese, Austrian, or Russian?) OR if you prefer, you may select one of the peoples from this module (Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Indian, Chinese).
Step II: Search the Module 1 Web Resources pages and the Internet for 10 different sources that relate to the culture term. DO NOT USE the library to search for sources. Module 3 presents two cultures of the Aegean: the Minoans of Crete, and the Mycenaean people on the Greek mainland. The rarity of written evidence from this period forces historians to rely on architectural remains and artifacts to interpret the cultures. We will do the same.
Two vibrant Aegean civilizations existed that were concurrent with Middle and New Kingdom Egypt. These were the cultures of the Minoans, based on the large island of Crete (c.1900-c.1450), and the Mycenaean people, based on today’s mainland Greece (c.1600-c.1100 BCE). These were not Greeks, but pre-Greek peoples. Very few written records survive, and so we do not have the same full picture of history here that we do for the Egyptians. Archaeological evidence, however, shows these cultures to be prosperous groups whose wealth was based on seafaring trade.
Late 19th and early 20th century digs have uncovered important citadel or palace complexes related to these groups. For the Minoans, the text concentrates on the Palace of Knossos on Crete. This labyrinthine structure included living quarters, mercantile areas, courtyards, a processional corridor, theaters and religious spaces. Surviving wall paintings have an informal, even playful quality. Pottery, an important art and export item, show painted motifs whose curling, free-floating forms derive from sea life and other nature subjects.
For the Mycenaean culture, the text concentrates on the hilltop site of Mycenae, for which this culture is named. Here, you will find massive defensive walls, evidence of palace architecture, and shaft graves which held gold funerary masks and decorative items of wealth, incorporating the same playful Minoan imagery.
In this module, you will also be introduced to the Greeks. These people migrated onto the Greek peninsula between 1200 and 1100 BCE, ending Mycenaean dominance there. History is sparce for several hundred years, but a strong Greek culture emerged around 800 BCE. We saw how important tradition and persistent conventions were to the Egyptians. The Greek culture contrasts with this traditionalism by embracing experimentation and exploration in everything from political systems, to philosophical ideas, to empirical science. Competition between the separate Greek city states helped spur on their seemingly modern notion of progress. In art, we also see experimentation and evolution of style. In this module, we can focus on pottery alone to see rapid style changes that form a traceable, linear progression. The four Greek pottery phases are Geometric, Orientalizing, Black Figure and Red Figure. Each style presents beautiful representation of Greek myths and legends, along with athletic events and secular Greek life.

The main purpose of museum is to neither educate nor entertain but rather to create a memory bank that would remind us of the past. Most societies in different parts of the world traced their origin through the works of arts history. All across the world there are hundreds of museums filled with history, information, shows, and famous documents. A variety of museums display interesting objects. A mix of cultures, historical events, famous people, and art work in the whole museum. Rather than having different attractions, some museums are dedicated to showing of shows based on a particular topic of history or interest for example the National Museum.
Upon going for an exhibition at one of the national museums, the experience I gained was very valuable and important on the understanding of the artworks used by the early humans . The visual experience gained during the exhibition was more appealing compared to reading of the curatorial essay about the exhibition at the museum which was entitled the The American Early Plates. The visual experience gives a visitor the chance to physically interact with artifacts especially when one can touch the artifacts. The curator essay about the exhibition in the museum had a lot of significance in understanding the artifacts used in the exhibition. The curatorial essay gave me the knowledge of understanding the origin, uses and dates of the various artifacts I visually witnessed at the museum. In general the visiting of the museum exhibit gave me a valuable experience as demonstrated.
The exhibition made me understand that a museum is an institution housing collections of objects of artistic, historic, or scientific interest and displayed for the educational and enjoyment of the public. I also noticed that Museums are places of memory that provides the link of distant past to the present generation which also help the society to know the path their forebears trod. The visit of the exhibition gave me the understanding of the artifacts in the display for example the display of an artifact referred to as the American earliest plate
The exhibition gave visitors the experience of comparing the modern American plates and those used in the early days. The exhibition gave the visitors a great chance to know the improvements the materials presented at the exhibition have undergone over time and the factors that have triggered such improvements. The visitors were also able learn history behind the making such of plates, the skills for making such plates and their relevance in those days.
In conclusion special exhibition helps one understand that museums are trustworthy, the importance of various artifacts to aid in the reconstruction of history. One is also able to compare the artifacts in museum with related objects which are currently in use. The importance of museum to hold a special exhibition for various artifacts is also understood.

the ‘resource curse’
The first decade of the twenty-first century (the 2000s) saw mining regain prominence, particularly as the price of many mineral products rose sharply, resulting in an increase in the terms of trade not seen for over a century. The profitability of mining led to a ‘mining boom’, manifested not only to an increase in highly profitable mining activity but to a boom in other sectors of the economy linked to mining and in particular to mining-related investment.
However, while mining served as a positive stimulus to economic development, the ‘mining boom’ also - somewhat paradoxically - adversely affected other, export-oriented, sectors of the economy to the point where sectors of the economy that had expanded following the microeconomic reforms of the 1980s and 1990s actually declined (the percentage of exports represented by manufacturing and service such as education actually falling from the levels reached during the 1990s). The proximate cause of this was the sharp appreciation in the value of the $A resulting from the demand for $As to buy resources.
When the ‘mining boom’ (or more particularly the boom in mining-related investment) ended in the early 2010s and the price of mineral products (notably coal and iron ore) fell from their unprecedentedly high levels in the 2000s, a further period of subdued economic activity ensued.
The period is also complicated by what has been termed the ‘global financial crisis’, one of the main implications of which was a worldwide recession and fall in demand for Australian exports, particularly natural resources. While Australia avoided the recession that was typical of most comparable countries (and indeed by about 2011 was treating the GFC as something of a ‘blip’) the longer-term effects are still working themselves out.
The course of development in the early 2010s is also clouded by the fact that the future demand for the commodity that is Australia’s second largest export commodity - coal - is uncertain. There is increasing reluctance in many countries to use the commodity for generating power given the greenhouse gases emitted as a consequence.

Because for one, they are not original sources. Encyclopedias and textbooks are useful to provide an overview or introduction to a topic for complete beginners. These are meant to get you started on a subject. They are not research documents.

Many instructors forbid reference to Wikipedia at all. Some professors do allow its use, and the use of encyclopedias in general, but don't do it. It's generally reliable for checking routine facts and extremely specialized topics, but Wikipedia, actually all encyclopedias suffer from the problem that they are not a primary sources. Wikipedia has the added problem that although it is working on correcting errors, it still has weak quality control. It is susceptible to deliberate sabotage, vandalism, even censorship. Write a essay. - Cultural patrimony (an object with cultural, historic, or traditional importance to a certain group or nation) is an ongoing subject of debate with culturally significant works of art collected in museums across the globe and far from their place of origin. Works of art have long been prized during wars and colonization as the rightful reward of the victors and most often without the consent of the vanquished. Do these circumstances of ownership become part of the history of an object thus endowing it with universal significance or do individual countries have the right to have works returned on the basis of national identity? Click here for an excellent introductory discussion of cultural heritage found on the Khan Academy website. Countries seeking the return (or repatriation) of their cultural patrimony have done so with and without success. Ideas of ownership have changed over time and since the 1970’s organizations like UNESCO ( click here to go to their website) have established international laws to protect works of art and antiquities from looting and destruction. Nevertheless, cases that predate these rules are often difficult to prove. Once a work has been in a museum collection for centuries should it be considered a part of a greater world heritage despite the unsavory means with which it might have been collected? Or do the national interests of individual countries and their feelings of injustice outweigh this consideration, thus giving primacy to a specific cultural inheritance over a universal one?

This topic will ask you to explore these questions, among others, in a 4 page essay discussing the case of the Parthenon sculptures – aka The Elgin Marbles - Your argument will be based on scholarly research using the online databases on the library website as well as relevant books in the collection. You will also want to go to the websites of the British Museum and the Parthenon Museum for information about these works and how each museum discusses them in relationship to their heritage. - Submit a paper no fewer than 4 f ull pages -Format your paper with 12pt font (Calibri or NTR), 1.5” spacing, 1” margins and no extra spaces between paragraphs - · Utilize correct spelling, punctuation & grammar throughout, and ensure: o Proper noun/verb agreement o Correct use of writing voice o Clarity of writing o Correct punctuation used when describing works of art (titles are either in italics or underlined and capital letters used for names of artists, e.g. "Praxiteles’ Spear Bearer was sculpted c. 450-440 BCE”) · Proper use of footnotes and acknowledgement of sources
