A critical response invites you to question the story in profound and meaningful ways.
Stories are about the human experience and in this essay you will respond to elements of
the story: character, setting, theme, symbolism, tone, details, place, time, or narrator.
Explore how the story affected you as a reader.
A good response describes your reaction to the reading and how you understand the
meaning of the story. Some questions to consider as you write your response:
Which characters could you identify with and why?
What attitude does the author have to the world in the story?
What social, cultural, or historical conditions influenced this writer?
What symbols does the writer use to create meaning in the story
How important is the place and time to the meaning of the story?
How is the work related to problems in our present-day world?
How is the material related to your life, experiences, feelings and ideas? For instance, what
emotions did you experience when reading this story?
Did the work increase your understanding of a particular issue? Did it change your
perspective in any way?
Your response should be between 500 and 700 words, double spaced.
Remember to introduce the story and author first.
Give a brief plot summary (no more than 4 or 5 sentences), followed by your immediate
impressions of the story and then your thesis.
The body of this paper is the detailed response to the story. Use textual evidence as support
for your ideas.
