As part of its mobile engagement solution, Aruba offers all mobile app developers the opportunity to take advantage of Aruba Beacons and Aruba Meridian SDK to create engaging experiences within a venue's existing mobile app. Join us for a discussion of best practices on how you can engage with internal or external mobile app developers.

What is a Software Development Kit?
Also known as “SDK” (and slightly incorrectly as
“API”):
A package that a software developer can download that allows them to embed
certain third party features into their existing mobile app.
• SDKs do not allow a customer to build an app from scratch on their own.
• SDKs are specific to the operating system (OS) of the mobile device.
• SDKs require a mobile app developer to embed the SDK code tools into an
existing mobile app code base.

What is a Software Development Kit?
Compare an SDK to a Garmin car navigation system, and a venue’s mobile app to the car
itself. And a mobile app OS to the make of the car.
– Mercedes still needs to build the car
– Mercedes would outsource a 3rd party system for car navigation
– Mercedes can’t just tape a Garmin GPS computer inside it; an engineer/electrician needs to
wire and configure it to the main system of the car.
– This wiring/configuration process will be different for different types of cars (Mercedes,
Toyota, Chrysler, Ford, etc.)

Meridian SDKs allow a customer to add certain Meridian
features to their existing mobile app:
1. NavKit to add self-guided wayfinding features.
2. BluDotKit* to add “Blue Dot,” real-time mapping feature.
3. CampaignKit* to add proximity-based notification feature.
* BluDotKit and ZoneKit also require Aruba Beacon Hardware

Quote from University of Oklahoma on their Aruba Beacons deployment
With its extensive collections including 17,000 linear feet of manuscripts and archives, more than one million photographs and more than a million maps, as well as its unique collaborative learning center, the OU Libraries is a popular destination for students, faculty and visitors. However, as Matthew Cook, Emerging Technologies Librarian for OU explained, it can be complicated to navigate. “It's an intimidating building, especially for first-time users, which include many of our incoming freshmen, and it’s a bit obscure. The resources and services are not immediately apparent when you walk in the front door,” Cook said. Cook noted that OU relies on the accessibility features built into the Meridian Mobile App Platform so they can provide users with disabilities the easiest route to elevators, for example, or during a storm, guide students using the library to the safest location. Said Cook, “Beyond the obvious convenience and efficiency the app brings our users, there’s a safety and security element as well.”
