Now For the Tidbits...
WordPress Security
         Panel
• Held by owners of WebDev Studios (Brad
Williams) and Sucuri Security (Tony Perez, Dre
  Armeda)

• Sucuri has a free website malware scanner:
  http://sitecheck.sucuri.net

• Sucuri provides website security consulting
  and services
WordPress Security Tips

• Manually install WordPress

• When you create your MySQL database, Set custom
prefix (otherwise WP makes it "wp_" )

• Make default admin user name other than "admin"

• STRONG PASSWORDS - at least ten characters with
CAPS, lowercase, and numbers (and a special
  character for good measure)

• Keep WP, themes and plugins up-to-date
WordPress Security Tips

• File transfer - use SFTP over SSH

• Hardening .htaccess file

• Last, but certainly not least, CHOOSE YOUR HOST
  WISELY!

• Codex - Hardening WordPress: http://
  codex.wordpress.org/Hardening_WordPress

• Sucuri blog article: http://blog.sucuri.net/2012/06/how-
  to-stop-the-hacker-by-hardening-wordpress.html
Crash Course in Theme
       Surgery

• Presented by Matthew DeVille

• Biggest tip I gleaned and already follow: USE
  A CHILD THEME!
Child Theme Basics
• Pick your parent theme - Twenty Ten, Twenty
Eleven and Twenty Twelve (coming very soon)
are good starter themes to customize

• Genesis Framework from StudioPress and it's
many child themes - or make your own child
theme based on it - my personal favorite
  http://www.studiopress.com
Child Theme Basics
• Create another directory under /wp-content/
  themes

• Edit the style.css header to reference parent
  theme, give child theme name

• Copy to the new theme folder

• That's all you really need! Now you can customize
the child stylesheet to your heart's content!
Child Theme Header
      Example
/*
Theme Name: Twenty Eleven Child (required)
Theme URI: http://example.com/
Description: Child theme for the Twenty Eleven theme
Author: Your name here
Author URI: http://example.com/about/
Template: twentyeleven (required, must be same as
folder name)
Version: 0.1.0
*/
Child Theme Basics
• To customize other template files
  (functions.php, page.php, single-post.php,
etc.), put copies from the parent theme in the
  child directory

• Add an /images subdirectory to the child to
add additional images to your theme

• Codex article - http://codex.wordpress.org/
  Child_Themes
Podcasting
• My talk was "Beef Up You Website with Audio
  and Video - It's Easy!"

  plugin you'll ever need

  players, both Flash and HTML5
