What is Wordpress?
 Wordpress is a blogging system that
allows you to put down your thoughts
and such in a format that people can
read.
 Wordpress has become the dominate
blogging tool on the internet.
 This is due to a number of factors that
mainly comes from the fact that so many
people have created blogs using
wordpress.

 What’s the difference?
 Wordpress is the blogging software
 Wordpress.com is the website that
allows you to create your own hosted
wordpress blog for free.
 Wordpress.com is create and run by the
same people that created wordpress
software.

 So which one will you use?
 Well, it’s going to be installing the blog
software on your own domain, then you
would want to use the wordpress
blogging software.
 If, all you want to do is have a free blog,
then you would simply go to
WordPress.com


How much does it cost?
 Well here’s the great news about
WordPress, it does not cost a single
dime!
 And that is also for the software to install
on your own server or to have a blog on
their website.
 So, why aren’t you using this now?


Why use it?
 So, why use a blogging software?
 While the biggest reason why you would
do this is for more traffic to your website.
 The other reason would be to get more
clients.
 And yet another reason would be to get
more press coverage for your business.

 And best of all for all the additional traffic
 All the additional clients
 And all the additional press coverage
 It does not cost you one dollar!

 Don’t worry about having content for
your WordPress blog
 I’ll show you a couple of different ways
to get content for your WordPress blog
that takes very little effort on your part!


What is a blog?
 So, exactly what is a blog?
 Well a blog is a more organized way to
present your thoughts, ideas, and
information to the public.
 A lot of times the blog is about a person’s
inner feelings and views on subjects
 For a business it would be a place to
discuss new services, new ventures, new
products and general information about the
business.


What is a blog?
 For example, my own blog that I have
that WordPress.com is called Internet
Predator Tracker.
 This blog is not only about my software,
but it’s also a general blog about my
own views and takes on different issues
involving the Internet, security, and
general information.
 So really, a blog is what you make it!


What do you blog about?
 So, what should you blog about?
 You can blog about anything when it
comes to creating your own blog.
 You blog about your business, your
services, your new services, your new
products, the latest movies, music you
heard on the way to work, pretty much
anything.
 It’s all up to you.


What should you blog about?
 So now you know what a blog is about
 And you know what you can blog about
 But what should you blog about?
 Well that depends on what you want to
do with this blog.
 If you’re going to be doing this for your
business you need to be able to have a
goal in mind for this blog.


 If your goal is to simply get the word out
about your business, then blog about
anything involving your business.
 If your goal is to bring more customers
and your business, then you need to
blog about very specific items.
 If your goal is to get ranked higher in the
search engine’s, then you need a very
specific plan of action.


 Now if you’re blogging to increase your
business or rankings in the search
engines, the mirror very specific things
you should do.
 This involves something called search
engine optimization.
 And yes it’s not just for a webpage, you
also need to do this for blogs.
 Why?


 If you want more business, then you
need to make sure that your blog is
carefully built.
 What you need to do is make sure that
you have researched your Keywords!
 If you are not sure what keywords are,
let me give you a quick overview.


Keywords
 Keywords are the way search engines
work.
 Keywords are: PI, Private Investigator,
GPS, etc
 FORGET GETTING THE TOP
RANKINGS FOR THOSE!!
 Besides those are worthless keywords,
people using those are browsing. You
want BUYERS.

 Lets see what we can find!

Designing your blog
 Now that you have your keywords, you
now can start to put together your blog.
 You need to first create a gmail account
based on your Primary Long Tail
keyword.
 For example: private investigator new
york
 Your blog title (meaning the overall title,
not just the postings) should have that
same long tail keyword

 And since you have those keywords
already put together, keep them on a
notepad on your PC.
 This way, you can access them quickly.
 Don’t worry, you will need them again!


Where to setup a blog?
 Well, that would depend on what your
goal of the blog is.
 I would say first, set it up on
wordpress.com or pimallblog.com
 Then you can create another blog on
your own website, that is slightly
different then the other one.
 So, at least have one blog on
wordpress.com or pimallblog.com


PI Mall Blog
 PI Mall blog is a free service that I have
setup for everyone to use in order to
create their own blogs.
 This uses the wordpress software and
with the links to the PI Mall, it gives it a
good high rating already for you.
 It will give you all the same abilities as
the wordpress.com site.
 And it is FREE!


Wordpress.com
 Here is the original worpdress blog site.
 It’s pretty easy to use, all you need is an
email address and you can start creating
your own blog within minutes!
 And it is already listed as one of the
sites that is searched on a continuing
basis by Google, Yahoo and Bing.
 And this is a FREE site!


Your own blog software
 Now, if you want to run your own blog,
on your own server, then your best
choice is using the Wordpress software.
 You can download the software for free
from www.wordpress.org
 NOTE: That is NOT wordpress.com!!
 Also, most hosted websites have an
option to install the wordpress software.


Your own blog software
 If you do install your own copy of
wordpress blog software on your hosted
site, follow these guidelines
 Name the directory for the blog:
 Blog
 Private investigator blog
 New York private investigator blog
 Again, building on your primary
keywords here.


Signing up for Wordpress
 Signing up for a Wordpress blog is very
easy.
 You need just a few things:
 An email address (NOT your main company
email!)
 A blog title (KEYWORDS FOLKS!)
 Something to blog about!

 We are going to cover the signing up for
a blog now.
 Since PI Mall blog is built on the
Wordpress blog software, I will just show
you how to do this from a
Wordpress.com site.

 Now that you have everything together:

 Just head on over to:
www.wordpress.com
 NOTE: Do NOT go to
www.wordpress.org!

Now its time to configure the blog
 Once you have signed up, you can go
and see your blog by going to the blog
address you created.
 However, that will just show you the blog
itself, if you want to do anything, you
need to go to the admin panel.
 That is located at:
 Yourblogname.wordpress.com/wp-
admin/

 The admin panel is where everything will
happen.
 Here you can make changes to your site
 Post to the site
 Upload a video
 See stats
 See comments

 The admin panel has the Dashboard on it
that has a number of options to look at.

 Okay, lets take a look at it in action.


Upgrades
 With the Upgrades option, you can get
some additional things for your blog, but
at a cost!
 Add a domain: $5
 VideoPress: $60
 Custom CSS: $15
 Space upgrades: $20, $50, $90
 No-Ads: $30
 Unlimited Private users: $30

Posts
 Under this section you can find out all
the information about the posts on your
blog.
 You have author information, categories,
tags, stats and date
 Plus you can control the actions of the
posts, approve, delete, etc.


Posts


Media
 If you purchased the additional media
space, you can upload a lot of videos to
your blog.
 Basic accounts only have 3GB of
storage.
 You can upload MP3, MP4a, WAV, OGG
files.
 But if you just link to your YouTube
account, no need to upload or store the
videos!


Media


Links
 Here you can put in all sorts of links for
your blog.
 Of course, you better link back to each
PAGE in your website.
 BUT make sure that the pages have a
different title, description and “theme”
 Also, link to all of your other web2.0
websites, your Squidoo lens and such

Pages
 These are the pages that you can create
that talk about your blog
 Or the pages can provide information
about your service
 These are static pages


Pages


Comments
 This is where visitors can leave
comments on your blog
 It is up to you if you want people to do
this or not.
 But, you do get the ability to approve, or
deny these comments.


Ratings
 This is where you can rate the different
pages on your blog
 I really don’t use this that much at all.


Polls
 Here you can create a Poll for your
visitors.
 I would use this for split testing a new
idea, a new service, something like that
 Its also a great way to see what your
visitors are thinking or doing.
 By creating a poll, you can better target
your visitors with products or
information.


Appearance
 Here is where you can customize your
blog to look better to your visitors.
 Now, appearance does not have a lot to
do with SEO, but….
 The “design” of your site can help!


Themes
 Here you can change the look of your
blog by choosing a different look for your
website.
 There is no big SEO, Search Engine
Optimization, secret with the theme
 Just choose the theme that you find the
most appealing
 And there is no problem changing it
every so often.


Widgets
 These give you a number of things that
you can add in to your blog to make it a
better place to visit.
 There are many different widgets that
you can look at and choose from as
well.
 I would always look at other Social
networking options for this, twitter, flickr,
delicious, etc.

 How do you use them?
 EASY!
 Just find the widget that you want, and
click on it, and then drag it over to the
Sidebar
 Now you have a new widget to
configure!


Extras
 Minor things to add to your blog
 Keep the two defaults, that’s about it.


Custom Header
 If you have a customer header graphic,
then you can upload it here.
 Should you?
 YES!!!
 The size should be 700 x 200 pixels
 But, make sure that a graphic artist
creates it.
 Have your logo, blog title, in the graphic.


TypeKit Fonts
 Nope, don’t use it.


Edit CSS
 If you know CSS, you can make some
changes here.
 But if you want real power with CSS,
you must buy that option.
 If you are selling a PRODUCT, you
would want to do this.
 If the blog is about you or your PI
business, it is not worth the money.


Users
 Here you can create users on your blog
that can add content to your blog
 These could be, and should be your
employee’s
 Either real, or fake.
 And you can even add others if you
have more of a community based blog.

 These are special tools that allow you to
do a few nice things with the site
 Speed up wordpress
 Press This, grab information from the
web to post to your blog
 Post with IE8, again another way to post
information from the web to your blog
 Post by email
 Webmaster tools, for tracking


Settings
 This is where you can go in and modify
all the different settings on your blog.
 Title
 Tagline
 Email address
 Date format
 Time format


Making your first post


 To make your first post, just go to your
Dashboard and click on the Quick Press
 Just give your post a Title
 And enter your content!
 Next, you MUST enter your keywords
for this post.
 Remember the list I told you to keep on
your desktop? Use that list.


 In the world of Wordpress, your
keywords are now known as Tags
 Keywords should not only be in your
“tags”, but also in your POST
 Now, all you have to do is click Publish!
 That’s it!


One blog, two blogs, three
 Should you have more then one blog?
 YES, YES, YES!
 Have one on your main business
 Have one on yourself
 Have one for each of your employees!
 But make sure, that each blog has links
to the other blogs
 And links to your site!


Blogging Schedule
 Blog at least once a day
 Blog about a main keyword at least
twice a week
 Blog about your service once a week.

Getting blogging material
 How can you get blogging material?
 Do you really need to think of it every
day?
 NOPE!
 Here are some great ways to get
material for your blog!


Google Alerts
 Log into your Gmail account and open a
new tab on your browser.
 Then go to: www.google.com/alerts
 Here you will setup a series of alerts on
keywords that you are interested in.
 Suggestions:
 Private investigator
 Facebook security
 Facebook investigations
 etc

Yahoo Pipes
 What a great way to get FREE content in
an automated fashion,
 You don’t have to do the work!!!
 Just go to pipes.yahoo.com and you can
open up a FREE account
 If you want to find a pipe to use, just use
the Search Pipes in the upper right hand
corner and you are ready!
 If you need more, download my FREE
class on Yahoo Pipes!


Wrap up
 A blog is a MUST for your business
 There is no way to run a business on the
web without one
 So, go, NOW and create yours!
 But, make sure you let me know about
it!

about it!
