This section provides definitions of gifted and talented. These definitions do not come from IDEA 2004 because this legislation does not cover students who are gifted. The section continues with a discussion of the prevalence of gifted and talented students in schools.
Defining Gifted and Talented
Gifted is often used as an umbrella term that describes individuals who are gifted or talented. Students who are gifted demonstrate innate abilities that are exceptional. Students who are talented demonstrate exceptional performance related to their ability. Most people use the terms gifted and talented interchangeably.
While there are no universal definitions of gifted or talented, the primary organization that represents gifted students, the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC), provides the following guideline:
Gifted individuals are those who demonstrate outstanding levels of aptitude (defined as an exceptional ability to reason and learn) or competence (documented performance or achievement in top 10% or rarer) in one or more domains. Domains include any structured area of activity with its own symbol system (e.g., mathematics, music, language) and/or set of sensorimotor skills (e.g., painting, dance, sports). (2008)
According to the NAGC definition, gifted and talented students demonstrate or have the potential for exceptional abilities in one or more areas.
Another definition, this one from a federal statute, explains that gifted and talented students demonstrate higher performance or are capable of higher performance in intellectual, creative, or leadership domains. According to these definitions, which also vary from state to state, gifted and talented students need specialized instruction, activities, or services in order to develop their exceptional abilities above and beyond general classroom instruction (Stephens & Karnes, 2000).
Gifted and Talented and IDEA 2004
Giftedness is not a category under IDEA 2004, but many school districts serve gifted students through special education offices or programs. The thinking is that students with disabilities require individualized instruction to meet their learning needs, and the same should be true for gifted students. The wide variability in definitions of gifted by both states and districts, though, means that many gifted students are not identified and are underserved (Robertson, Pfeiffer, & Taylor, 2011).
Furthermore, money to provide specialized programs to gifted students does not come from funds provided to school districts under IDEA 2004. Districts provide services through their district budgets; some schools apply for grant funding or work with private organizations to provide programs for gifted students.

This written assignment is a personal reflection of your interpretation of your findings on segregation after performing a short literature review and conducting an interview with a local school.
Article Review
Locate two relatively current peer-reviewed articles (no more than 10 years old) on segregation in schools or resegregating schools. These articles do not have to discuss segregation overtly, it can be (and often is) implied. You may use the recommended resources for this week to locate these sources.
Interview
What experience or knowledge do you have of any contemporary segregation happening in your local schools, a school you used to attend, or one you have heard about? Think about the variety of groups discussed thus far as you consider contemporary segregation.
Conduct an informal interview, either face to face, via phone, or other means, with an administrator, teacher, or other credible staff member to address the perception of segregation in the school setting.
The following points should be considered in your interview:
Student demographics: (race, ethnicity, ELL, SPED, socioeconomic status, sexual orientations, if known)
What evidence is there to suggest that contemporary segregation is occurring and to what extent?
What they suggest could potentially be done to desegregate in their school OR describe what they know has been done over time to change perceptions.
Realize that the community itself may be segregated. For example, for students living in certain rural areas, there is simply very little exposure to minority cultures. This is an example of community segregation.(You may choose to use a different word, as “segregation” (e.g., exclusion) is a socially charged word and school personnel may become defensive).
It is pertinent that this interview is handled with sensitivity. Your goal is not to provoke an emotional reaction or make accusations or judgments. It is critical that your communication is proactive and professional when you set up your interview. You should be transparent about your assignment and the intent to understand issues that are commonly referred to as being historical in nature but may still be prevalent or in different forms than typically understood. It is therefore equally important that you select your interviewee wisely, keeping to professional staff with some real knowledge of the demographics and background of the school selected.

These articles do not have to discuss segregation overtly, it can be (and often is) implied. You may use the recommended resources for this week to locate these sources.
Interview
What experience or knowledge do you have of any contemporary segregation happening in your local schools, a school you used to attend, or one you have heard about? Think about the variety of groups discussed thus far as you consider contemporary segregation.
Conduct an informal interview, either face to face, via phone, or other means, with an administrator, teacher, or other credible staff member to address the perception of segregation in the school setting.
The following points should be considered in your interview:
Student demographics: (race, ethnicity, ELL, SPED, socioeconomic status, sexual orientations, if known)
What evidence is there to suggest that contemporary segregation is occurring and to what extent?
What they suggest could potentially be done to desegregate in their school OR describe what they know has been done over time to change perceptions.
Realize that the community itself may be segregated. For example, for students living in certain rural areas, there is simply very little exposure to minority cultures. This is an example of community segregation.(You may choose to use a different word, as “segregation” (e.g., exclusion) is a socially charged word and school personnel may become defensive).
It is pertinent that this interview is handled with sensitivity. Your goal is not to provoke an emotional reaction or make accusations or judgments. It is critical that your communication is proactive and professional when you set up your interview. You should be transparent about your assignment and the intent to understand issues that are commonly referred to as being historical in nature but may still be prevalent or in different forms than typically understood. It is therefore equally important that you select your interviewee wisely, keeping to professional staff with some real knowledge of the demographics and background of the school selected.

Global Governance
Global governance or world governance is a movement towards political integration of transnational actors aimed at negotiating responses to problems that affect more than one state or region. It tends to involve institutionalization.These institutions of global governance - the United Nations, the International Criminal Court, the World Bank, etc. In the absence of a global government, the term
“Global Governance”
refers to how global affairs are governed by regulations and other practices and norms that apply on a global scale. The actors in this process include States, Intergovernmental Organizations, Nongovernmental Organizations, Multinational Corporations, and other actors that have an impact on how the above actors conduct their affairs.
One given organization, typically an Intergovernmental Organization, takes a lead role on an issue and leads the other actors in achieving consensus and producing agreements that determine how the governance is carried out. These agreements will affect both states and non-state actors (Finkelstein 53). The common understanding of global governance is the framework under which all the said actors need to act in unison for the good of all, but often different actors bring different intentions to the table. One of the defining characteristics of a state is sovereignty: the authority of a state to govern itself.
Under a framework of global governance, however, agreements thrashed out by entities that are not part of a given state are followed and acted upon by states. This threatens or usurps the sovereign authority of the state in governing itself since regulations drafted by “outsiders” are brought to bear and have an impact on the state (Scholte 113). At the same time, actors such as multinationals, many of whom have more financial clout than many a sovereign state, bring their influence and wishes to carry the day in giving states under the rubric of global governance. This is especially in situations where a state may not ordinarily acquiesce to the wishes of the said multinationals if the engagement was on a one-to-one basis.

This organization became the frame work for the United Nations set up as one of the most well known Intergovernmental Organizations today. As a way of experiencing the Humanities beyond your classroom, computer, and textbook, you are asked to do a certain type of “cultural activity” that fits well with our course and then report on your experience. Your instructor will require you to propose an activity and get instructor approval before you do it and report on it (students should look for any instructions in that respect). Every effort should be made to ensure that this is a hands-on experience (not a virtual one), that this activity fits the HUM 112 class well, and that the activity is of sufficient quality for this university course. The two (2) key types of activities are a museum visit or a performance.
Note
: This must not be a report on the same activity (and certainly not the same report) as done for another class, like HUM 111. For instance, one might go to the same museum as done for HUM 111, but this HUM 112 report will focus on entirely different works and displays.
Visit a museum or gallery exhibition or attend a theater, dance, or musical performance before the end of Week 10. The activity (museum or performance) should have content that fits our course well. Have fun doing this.

It makes sense to approach a museum the way a seasoned traveler approaches visiting a city for the first time. Find out what is available to see. In the museum, find out what sort of exhibitions are currently housed in the museum and start with the exhibits that interest you.
If there is a travelling exhibition, it’s always a good idea to see it while you have the chance. Then, if you have time, you can look at other things in the museum.
Every effort should be made ahead of time to identify a museum that has items and works one can easily connect to our HUM 112 class and book. Since HUM 112 covers from 1600 AD to the present, it makes more sense to focus on items from this time frame. In general, museums with fin.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing.
