              The two wooden dolls project
Two imaginary pupils (the two wooden dolls) are pictured
starting a new life in Berlin, Germany and in Stockholm, Sweden.
The project focuses on their leaving their native countries for a

This is how we work in
Germany…
We use English ”building blocks” and
glossaries.

Research (Internet), Designing the doll (Paint
Shop Pro, Animation Shop 3), Communication
                 (Blog, Video conferencing).
…. and in Sweden.

                    This is us working on
                     the project together
                       with our school
                            nurse.
We watch the German
                              presentations and check
                              our own before mailing
                              them to Berlin.

The presentations are shown
on the SMART Board.
Together we work on the
slides in class.

    Here are Here you can
  many people! see my in
                                                     front of it.

In our winter-holydays I went to the city of Berlin with my friend
Kristina and aunt Elif .
First we went by bus 100 to the “Brandenburger Tor”.
Do you know the Berlin bear?
It is the heraldic animal of
            Berlin!
 You can buy it everywhere
Oh, I must have
ice-cream now.
I like ice-cream!
                    Next we went to
                    “Gedächtniskirche” and to the
                    “Berliner Zoo”.
                    The “Gedächtniskirche” was
                    destroyed in second world war.

Now it’s a memorial for all
                    people.
In the zoo I visited many animals. My favourite animals are the
monkeys and the tigers.

    The weather is nice
   and many animals can
        be outside!
Back at school my
class and I visited
objects of interest
    of Berlin!

Dear Damla,
Thank you for the response on my Friends and
Family Power Point slides.

It’s a good thing that the church was left – it’s
interesting. The church helps us remember our
history.

Did you have fun at the zoo? What animals are
there at the Berliner Zoo?
We have a big zoo here, too. It’s called
Skansen. When the weather is good it’s nice
to visit the zoo. There are many animals at
Skansen and places where you can eat.

Best wishes
Lara

P.S. Visit this website:
www.skansen.se
Would you like
                     an animal?

It’s nice and fun
    to be here.
The zoo in Stockholm, Skansen, is
wonderful. It is situated across the
water. You can go there by ferry.

Nice people At the zoo
– yum, yum. I want to eat them.
                                      Yummy, yummy

                                          I wonder what they
                                          are thinking.
Greetings and digital postcards

The pupils in Berlin and Stockholm chose six new

                               a blog or

                               a videoconference.
Things can go wrong
Timetable problems - Involve/Invite other teachers
Real time conferencing - Blog or chat instead
Computer access - Planning, take turns, teamwork
ICT time consuming - Within curriculum - Reduce
number of presentations - Free periods
Parents’ permission - Participation without names
and photos. Use personal illustrations
Language - Communication rather than correctness
Material dolls - Make your own
The tools we used
MS Word (textwork)
Paint Shop Pro 8 (image processing)
Animation Shop 3 (animated image processing)
MS PowerPoint (presentation)
Clipart (illustrations)

Digital cameras (photos) – webcams (Skype)
The Internet (information)
E-mails (communication and exchanging material)
eTwinning website (Activity Card, TwinSpace)
School websites (publishing)
And of course: the dolls!
Do’s
Communicate Use a ’non-gender’ doll
Plan and be flexible Build a ’bank of photos’
Build a structure
Agree on a pattern
Keep it simple
The main theme
Benefits - pupils
Open - obvious Hidden - less obvious
ICT skills improved Self-confidence
English improved Personal stimulation
Communication Togetherness
Collaboration Pride
Sharing experiences/stories Participation
Mixed age group
Attention
Benefits - teachers
It is
stimulating
a chance to exchange experiences and
methods
a chance to discuss new ideas and solutions
a way to motivate pupils
FUN
Integration in
    the National Curriculum
Communication in English
Feelings, thoughts and experiences in English
Reflection upon ways of living and traditions
ICT
Responsibility
Collaborative schoolwork
Conclusion
Goals from the National Curriculum
Improved knowledge of English
ICT skills

Growing interest in further computer and project work
A European and global dimension
Communication across ’borders’

Sharing of experiences
Older and younger pupils together
A stimulating learning situation for everyone involved
In my opinion

          - We‘ve learnt many
         words as we‘ve all the
        time written in English
         to the other class. We
        have also learnt to type
          better and quicker.“
                 (Dean)

Da wir mit den anderen Klassen immer in
              Englisch schreiben, haben wir mehr
Vokabeln gelernt. Wir können auch dabei
              am Computer besser und schneller
              schreiben lernen.
              (Dean)
In my opinion
                                I am proud that we
                                did our best. (Luna)

- I wish that I could be in a
  project like this again. I
    have learned English
      words and about
PowerPoint, too, and it was
    fun doing it . (Simret)
