Women in Turkey still face significant challenges to gender equality, including domestic violence, honor killings, and restrictive patriarchal social norms. While the Turkish constitution bans gender discrimination and Ataturk's early reforms granted women political rights, women have much lower levels of employment and education than men and Turkey ranks relatively low on measures of gender equality. Interviews with Turkish women indicate that some still face pressure to marry young, adhere to traditional gender roles, and comply with religious expectations imposed by family.
