1. WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
Women’s empowerment can be defined to promoting
women’s sense of self-worth, their ability to determine
their own choices, and their right to influence social
change for themselves and others.
Process by which women gain power and
control over their own lives and acquire the
ability to make strategic choices.
Women’s empowerment and promoting
women’s rights have emerged as a part of a
major global movement and is continuing to
break new ground in recent years.
Women’s empowerment is an important goal in
achieving sustainable development worldwide.
2. Women’s empowerment has five components
women’s sense of self-worth;
their right to have and to determine choices;
their right to have access to opportunities and
resources;
their right to have power to control their own lives,
both within and outside the home;
and their ability to influence the direction of social
change to create a more just social and economic
order, nationally and internationally.
3. THE WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT PRINCIPLES
Created in a collaboration between the UN Global Compact and UN Women,
the Women’s Empowerment Principles are used to empower women in the
marketplace, workplace and community.
The seven Principles are:
Principle 1: Create high-level corporate leadership for gender equality
Principle 2: Treat all people fairly at work, respecting and supporting non-
discrimination and human rights
Principle 3: Ensure the health, wellbeing and safety of all workers, whether male
or female
Principle 4: Promote education, training and professional development for
women
Principle 5: Implement supply chain, marketing practices and enterprise
development that empower women
Principle 6: Champion equality through community initiatives and advocacy
Principle 7: Measure and report publicly on progress to create gender equality
4. NEED FOR WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
Empowering women to participate fully in economic
life across all sectors is essential to build stronger
economies, achieve internationally agreed goals for
development and sustainability.
Empowering women is essential to the health and
social development of families, communities and
countries.
5. HOW WOMEN EMPOWERMENT CAN BE
ACHIEVED
A key part of this empowerment is through
education. Girls who are educated can pursue
meaningful work and contribute to their country’s
economy later in life.
The individuals and government must both come
together to make it happen.
At the individual level, we should start respecting
women and start giving them opportunities equal to
men.
Women must be given equal opportunities in every
field, irrespective of gender.
We should promote and encourage them to take up
jobs, higher education, business activities, etc.
