1. WOMEN AND SPORTS
Author: Patricia Ceru
Sports participation and keeping physically active is very important in our lifestyles.
In the 1960’s through 1990’s many women strived to become athletes. Historically, women were
not given an opportunity to compete against males in sports. Many female athletes experienced
harassment and discrimination which limited their opportunities for athletic success.
Participation for women in sports has increased from 1991-2006:
Women’s Basketball Association has been successfulsince 1996 through present. Many women athletes
were not allowed to run in the Boston Marathons. An athlete named Katherine Switzer, an experienced long
distance runner was told by officials she could not participate in the race. Katherine’s persistence and determination
to compete began a legacy. After her 1967 success, women were allowed to enter and compete in marathons.
Another example of discrimination in women and sports was Olympian, Wilma Rudolph. She was discriminated
against because she wore a brace on her leg due to childhood illness and the underlying fact that she was a female.
She dominated these challenges by succeeding and winning the 1960 Olympics and received a bronze medal.
Denica Patrick, another female athlete was very successful in the racing competition world and had to overcome
negative comments such as, “I just don’t think sports are for women.” (Richard Petty) Males did not want females
to have publicity in the sports world. Beginning 1996, U.S. Women’s teams made headlines in Olympics for gold
medals in many sports including, basketball, softball, swimming and soccer.
By the year 2000 women competed in the number of sports teams as men. These women also opened the doors for
young girls to participate in “Little Leagues.” Gender equality and sports leadership has increased from 2006-2014.
Most of all women and sports have many advantages for good health: Playing sports requires memory and
learning which helps our minds and body. These skills can transfer to your work success. Sports activity boosts self
esteem and confidence. Hard work also promotes rewards such as improved ability to set goals and achieve them.
Sports playing releases stress and being physically active helps to control and manage weight. Sports and exercise
helps our minds, body, muscles, bones and our heart.
Besides the physical benefits of sports and physical activity there are mental health advantages:
Sports and physical activity creates a positive spirit. Team sports participation help provide a chance to engage
socially and improve fitness. The American Heart Association strongly suggests completing a mixof aerobic and/or
sports activities that will also provide good mental health. By staying physically active whether it is sports or any
type of exercise our endorphins are stimulated. This creates feelings of optimism that will in turn result from being
active. Whatever age or condition everyone can look and feel better with physical activity.
Remember, our female athletes set the role and the standards that inspired women to achieve their
goals. It is important for women to remember the long term benefits of sports and/or physical
activities to be successful and live happier and healthier lives.
