Paula Swedeen (Conservation Northwest) spoke about the WA Wolf Conservation and Management Plan and Wolf Advisory Group at the November NRC meeting.

2. Goals of Washington’s Wolf
Conserva3on and Management Plan
• Restore the popula3on in Washington to a self-
sustaining size and geographic distribu3on that
will result in wolves having a high probability of
persis3ng in the state for the foreseeable future
(>50-100 years)
• Manage wolf-livestock conflicts in such a way that
minimizes livestock loss while at the same 3me
not nega3vely impac3ng the recovery or long-
term perpetua3on of a sustainable wolf
popula3on.

• Maintain healthy and robust ungulate
popula3ons in the state that provide abundant
prey for wolves and other predators as well as
ample harvest opportuni3es for hunters.
• Develop public understanding of the
conserva3on and management needs of
wolves in Washington, thereby promo3ng the
public’s co-existence with the species

6. De-lis3ng Requirements
• 15 breeding pairs for three consecu3ve years,
with 4 in each recovery region plus 3 in any
part of the state, or;
• 18 breeding pairs in one year with 4 in each
recovery region and 6 anywhere in the state

14. Partnership makes range riding work: the rancher, the rider,
Washington Dept. of Fish & Wildlife and Conservation Northwest
are partners in this effort.

15. • Conservation Northwest’s wolf and livestock conflict avoidance programs
aren’t limited to range riding.
• We’re also using our staff, and member and volunteer networks, to help
ranchers and WDFW install fladry around calving pastures and grazing
areas.
