The internship involved traveling with a team of five interns throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York to collect physical and financial data from dairy heifers on customers' farms using Excel. The interns created growth charts using Penn State research and conducted cost analyses to estimate the costs of raising replacement heifers. They compiled packets with the growth charts, financial projections and genomic findings to present to producers and made recommendations. Over the course of the internship, the intern processed over 4,038 dairy heifers, gained experience with genomics and animal nutrition, and enhanced teamwork skills through networking opportunities.
