Solar energy was once thought too inefficient to be a dependable source of renewable energy, but that is changing thanks to improvements in technology.

Electricity generation infrastructure planning in the Age of Climate ChangeSteve Aplin
Carbon emissions from electric power generation are skyrocketing, including and especially in countries that have received praise for their support of renewable energy.
Meanwhile, countries with very low carbon emissions from power generation are generally ignored in policy circles and in the media. But, as energy and environment expert Steve Aplin demonstrates, these low-carbon countries have achieved spectacular environmental success without hurting their economies.
Aplin argues that these low-carbon countries should be the model for all developing countries that are expanding their power generation infrastructure.

The User Experience is the focus of my profession. Both physical and cognitive
ergonomics, when applied to industrial and interaction design, make the best

ichael Reynolds is a maverick in the construction
industry. Based in Taos, New Mexico, Reynolds
builds homes that embody many of the principles of
sustainability. The walls, for example, are constructed of
used automobile tires that otherwise would have ended up
in landfills. The recycled tires are packed with dirt from the
construction site, using a local resource. They’re laid on top
of one another like bricks to build thick walls. Cement

What a source of power! I hope we don’t have to
wait ‘til oil and coal run out before we tackle that.

stucco or earthen plaster is then applied to the tire
walls, creating an appealing design (FIGURE 15-1a).
Reynolds’s houses, called Earthships, are generally
built into the sides of hills, taking advantage of
the Earth to shelter the house from summer heat
and winter cold. With their thick walls and well-
insulated ceilings, Earthships are heated by the
sun and are extremely energy efficient. They stay
cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Reynolds’s homes are designed with interior
planters that line the south wall, permitting resi-
dents to grow a variety of vegetables year round
(FIGURE 15-1b). The plants are watered with waste-
water from sinks and showers—commonly called
gray water. In his most recent designs, Reynolds has
devised a system to capture nutrients from toilet
water. The waste is fed into specially lined out-
door planters, where it is broken down by bacte-
ria and other microorganisms. The nutrients are
used by plants growing in the planters.
Besides being heated by the sun, Reynolds’s
homes generate their own electricity from sunlight
and are equipped with efficient lighting systems
and appliances. His homes even capture and purify
rainwater and snowmelt off the roof for cooking,
drinking, bathing, washing dishes, and other uses.
Earthships are designed for self-sufficiency and
environmental responsibility. They are unlike con-
ventional homes, which Reynolds likens to pa-
tients in intensive care units that depend on outside
support in the form of food, water, and energy.

The electricity requirements of the world including India are increasing at alarming rate and the power demand has been running ahead of supply. It is also now widely recognized that the fossil fuels (i.e., coal, petroleum and natural gas) and other conventional resources, presently being used for generation of electrical energy, may not be either sufficient or suitable to keep pace with ever increasing demand of the electrical energy of the world. Also generation of electrical power by cold based steam power plant or nuclear power plants causes pollution, which is likely to be more acute in future due to large generating capacity on one side and greater awareness of the people in this respect.

LABC Solar Fit 4 LA presentation to MVCCSherri Akers
The LABC has made this presentation to the MVCC Green Committee and the following motion will be presented to the MVCC Board on Tuesday night Sept 14th.
The Mar Vista Community Council would like to extend our support to the Los Angeles Business
Council/UCLA’s proposed 600 MW Feed-in Tariff (FiT) program for the City of Los Angeles. We agree that the LABC/UCLA proposed program is an important step that our city can take right now to promote renewable energy in Los Angeles.
The LABC/UCLA Solar FiT program has already attracted the strong support of organizations
representing business, labor, the environment and numerous communities from around the city. We are pleased to join this extensive coalition of supporters because we believe the program offers great environmental and economic benefits for Los Angeles and its residents.

Wise Power Use Expo Set for November 3rd
Los Angeles, CA. October 1, 2010 - Following up on last year’s standing room only Wise Water Use Expo, the
Mar Vista Community Council Green Committee announces The Wise Power Use Expo. This event is geared
toward helping people learn about the numerous ways they can reduce their use of electricity or switch to clean
fuels like solar power.
Councilman Bill Rosendahl will kick off the Wise Power Use Expo event which will be held on November 3,
2010 in the gymnasium at the Solar Powered - Windward School at 11350 Palms Avenue in Mar Vista. Doors
will open at 6:30 for attendees to meet local experts who will be on hand to provide information on energy
saving solutions with special discounts. The speakers will go on at 7:30. Attendees will learn easy ways to save
electricity and money in their homes and businesses. Guest speakers will explain how to lower electrical use and
what options are available for renewable energy. The evening will include many exciting energy conservation
raffle items for attendees, including a whole house energy audit, valued at $499 and a $1,000 credit toward solar
panels.
Chris Paine, director of "Revenge of the Electric Car"(Spring, 2011) and co-founder the media project
"Counter-Spill", will share how he transformed an original Mid 20th Century Modern home into Marrakesh
House - a model for sustainable living in the 21st century.
Kevin O’Donnell, from Al Gore’s The Climate Project, will speak to why the world needs to get off coal and
convert to renewable energy.
Nancy Barba, of Bevilacqua-Knight, Inc. (BKi) and Sustainable Works, will provide easy changes that
individuals can make in their homes and businesses to reduce electricity consumption as well as the cost and the
expected payback of roof-top solar.
Andre Villasenor, the Southern California Sustainability Coordinator from the EPA, will explain what it means
for Mar Vista and other neighborhoods to be designated as an EPA Green Power Community.
The Wise Power Use Expo will be held in the gymnasium at Windward School 11350 Palms Avenue in Mar
Vista. Windward is one of the first schools in California to receive a LEED (Leadership in energy and
Environmental Design) for Schools verification. Find more details at www.wisepoweruseexpo.blogspot.com.
