Ten Steps to Streamlining Your Fundraising SystemBlackbaud
The donor/prospect database sits at the heart of every nonprofit’s development operations. How you use it (or don’t!) directly impacts your daily work and, quite often, your overall fundraising success. Unfortunately, many of us find our database lacking. The good news is that the problem isn’t usually the software itself. The culprits are usually inefficient business practices and disorganized data – both especially common in the nonprofit sector. These are problems that can be solved! And it’s not rocket science, but you do need a plan. Luckily, we have one for you. The first step in getting more from any software is committing to the initial effort to improve it. Are you ready? Great! Where do you start? In this session, we’ll present a practical, actionable ten-step plan that will help you streamline your fundraising system and operations so they’ll more easily and accurately support your strategies.

Automation, innovative management practices, and real-time communication tools are creating new models for skilled work. Every professional relies on software to structure and assist their work, and as that software becomes more intelligent it will gradually play a larger role in day-to-day tasks. Eventually, AI-powered platforms will facilitate complex work (from taxes to lawsuits) as easily as Uber calls a cab. Roger Dickey, the founder and CEO of freelance developer platform Gigster, will discuss how marketplaces and intelligent software can combine to improve and accelerate professional work, while making it more fulfilling, more profitable, and more accessible.
This presentation visualizes the business journey from a vision to working product in an agile world. Targeted primarily at business owners and users, it explores way of identifying the business capabilities, user personas and their translation into user stories with techniques to help with prioritization and product review post development.

What I'm about to tell you will surprise you. You may think that successful entrepreneurs are free-spirits who despise structure and are renegades who would rather work alone, only reluctantly hiring a team because there's no other choice.
What it takes to break away from the good old W-2 and start your own venture is a curious mix. Forget about the idea that you have to learn how to do everything yourself. The successful entrepreneur is far from this Lone Ranger model of running a business. In my model of entrepreneurialism, it's what experts call a "Cash Machine" business, you get to strengthen your strengths and hire your weaknesses.
Hiring the right people who will do what you can't or don't want to do is perhaps the one thing that differentiates a successful entrepreneur from one who simply moves from one job (working for someone else) to another job (working for him or herself). It's also a key difference between having a hobby and having a real business in which you earn a healthy income -- far better than what you're making at your current W-2 job!
Here are the key characteristics that you'll want to have or cultivate in yourself:
You must be the business owner. There's a lot of confusion about this characteristic, even amongst those I've coached. Being a business owner means that you take charge of your life. You begin running your life like a business, and run your business like you mean it. You must decide to take charge of every aspect of your life and business, leaving that shy, meek, "really nice person" behind. I don't mean that you have to become ruthless, but you do have to decide to be responsible and in charge.
Courage. It takes a certain amount of courage to get up every day, day after day, and take full responsibility for old problems, new challenges, and the day-to-day struggles that always arise. Some days will be fantastic, and others may feel like the hardest days of your life. Regardless of any existing or new circumstances, you have the heart to stick with it, literally owning your vision, and having faith in your ability to succeed.

Dear Hiring Manager:
I want to write this letter to express my interest to be your ERP administrator and analyst. Specially, I want to share my
personal history and some highlight of my skills.
I come from Hong Kong, major in Economics in UC Berkeley, and graduate in December 2005. I started off as a Planning
Analyst in a medical device manufacturer when I first enter the job market. Then I went to Cal State Fullerton to get
continuing education in Accounting, and I actually complete the CPA exams and finish internship with Life Equations
Accountancy in three years. I got my first Corporate Accountant job in Live Nation Inc. in 2010. At that time, they had a
very tedious process that requires a lot of manual work. I challenge myself and came up with a creative idea to create an
Excel VBA program that actually transfer the data from raw format into General Ledger input format in one minute.
Because of my new Excel VBA program and timeliness, I was tasked to help five regional managers to manage their venue
reporting. When the project is over, I went back to private industry for the following three years. When the owner of Life
Equations Accountancy, Mike Ong Gonzales, got a new project in NetSuite, he called me back, and my life has changed
since then.
I am always thankful for Mike because he boosted me up, and he is actually my business mentor. When I come back to
him second times, I work day and night to learn NetSuite and how this system work. We together accomplished an
incredible feat by winning a $360,000 annual contract for Pre-IPO audit and IT implementation project. Mike let me see
what I can accomplish, and he made me expand.
I want to expand myself and want to see the world. I got a job offer at Bay Area, so I moved to Northern California. At one
of the meeting, I met a recruiter from Dynamic Staffing, and she introduce me to a consultant position at BlueShield of
California. I was tasked to be the Revenue Accountant there. My main accomplishment there is not closing the book
monthly, but I actually help them to debug their Access program. I actually reduce the load time from one hour to ten
minutes by properly organize their code and correct the mistake.
When my wife demanded me to come to Vietnam to marry her, I left the position and travel to Vietnam for marriage. When
I come back, I was hired as an Accounting manager for Lux Beauty Group Inc. I learned a lot about manufacturing,
warehousing operation, and being a leader in the company. I actually recovered $130,000 missed billing and cash when I
organize their paperwork. However, the sales slump and my position get eliminated. I did a NetSuite consultant job in San
Diego, and I began to use Excel DAX to help accomplish faster and better reliable programming. However, my wife came
here to USA, and I want her to live in San Gabriel area, so I move back from La Mesa back to West Covina. I have been
looking for job in West Covina area, but there is not much big business in the area. I tried to work as New York Life agent,
but the requirement is too high that I didn’t qualify. However, I value the experience in New York Life, I want to thanks for
the partner to give me this opportunity. He made me learn the sales and personal communication skills.
As my wife settle in San Gabriel area, I am looking for opportunity near West Covina. My last consultant job hourly rate is
$40 per hour. I am very good in IT and Accounting, and I would welcome to listen to you if you have opportunity within
my area, and I can commute within one hour distance. I am really thankful that you give me a chance to share my
background, and I look forward to work with you.
Sincerely,
Wing Sun Lau, CPA & MCP
