Diocletian's Price Edict revealed that the Late Roman Empire had an economic system resembling a market economy, with private transactions and a diversity of occupations. The Edict showed there was a large wealth gap between social classes. Diocletian viewed merchants negatively, similarly to views expressed in "Discourses on Salt and Iron," believing they only sought personal gain without regard for others.
