Papua New Guinea has over 850 indigenous languages spoken but also uses several lingua francas, most prominently Tok Pisin and English. However, only 2% of the population speaks English. The case study profiles Margaret, a woman who learned English in school, allowing her to become a teacher and eventually work in New Zealand. In contrast, her siblings who did not attend school and learn English are unemployed and rely on Margaret's income. Learning English provided Margaret opportunities for career advancement, international employment, and the ability to financially support her family.
