Medora Chevalier is a 21 st century poet. she is a well- known writer of present day. in this poem she writes about how the animals would become extinct of they are not protected.

2. THE POEM, ‘OR WILL THE DREAMER
WAKE?’ IS WRITTEN BY DEDORA
CHEVALIER.
THE POET TALKS ABOUT THE ANIMALS
AND BIRDS WHICH ARE IN THE STATE
OF EXTINCTION.
IT IS HIGH TIME FOR US TO WAKE UP
AND PROTECT THESE SPECIES.

6. FIRST, the author speaks about tigress.
The forest, a shelter for wild animals, is now listening to
the tigress’s plaintive and painful cry.
The forest is a shelter for all the animals. When the poet
says that the big trees of the forest are able to hear her
breathing.
He implies the deep relationship between the forest and
the animals.
As forest are slowly disappearing, these poor cubs could be
the last ones on the earth to live freely.
Due to the deforestation, the animal habitat is affected.
Today, their survival is a question mark.
The poet warns us that next generations never know the
tiger as a living thing unless we wake up and take measures
to protect them.

Researchers chose to release the dramatic photos along with statistics to
help educators and the public visualize exactly how serious the problem of
rising sea levels is.
The study notes that observations of 5,200 glaciers around the world
shows not only that more glaciers are retreating than advancing, but that
the amount of ice lost is "without precedent." The society attributes the
cause to global warming, caused by "rising concentrations of greenhouse
gases released by the combustion of fossil fuels.“
Glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica are losing ice at alarming rates, and
warmer air isn’t the only cause.
Scientists increasingly agree that warm ocean water is seeping beneath the
ice and melting it from the bottom up.
It’s a growing problem in Greenland, scientists say, and it may already be
the dominant driver of melting glaciers in Antarctica. But while scientists
know that warm water is interacting with the ice front in both places,
exactly what’s driving it there—and how climate change may be involved—
is still an open question.

14. In this stanza, the poet raises doubt about survival
of the polar bear. These species are at the verge of
extinction. The bear has been enjoying her life in
the snow. But now, it is snuffling down in her
lair(den) in the shining snow and worried about her
cubs’ survival.
This depicts, due to global warming, glaciers are
melting down and habitat of animals living in ice
and snow is in danger.
The poet warns us; if the same continues, the next
generations would never know the white bear as a
living thing. It is high time for us to wake up and
protect them.

17. In this stanza, the author talks about the bird thrush,
The sweet songs by thrush amidst the trees fill the forest
with joy.
These birds waits for long to find their partner. Once she
found the partner, she lays few eggs in her nest.
Such birds are now in danger and these chicks could be
the last ones ever to fly freely on the earth.
Here the author wants to convey that due to
deforestation birds are not able to get their food, build
their nests, losing their source of survival.
The poet warns us that the future generations would
never hear the song thrush. They would see the song
thrush categorised as an extinct species. At least now,
would the visionary (dreamer) wake up and do
something to save them.

19. In this stanza the poet talks about whales which are also at
the verge of extinction.
The whale swims deep and adds beauty to the ocean.
Her sound while birthing fills the seas with pride. This sound
resembles a song.
Thousand of creatures wait to witness the divine birth of a
whale. But this child may be the last one to sing the final
whale song; and make the oceans shake.
The poet wants to convey that ship trafficking and oil
drillings are posing danger to the lives of many species that
live in water.
The poet warns us that the coming generations may not
hear the mystery of whale’s birth. But, would the dreamer
wake and do something to protect them.

21. In the last stanza, the poet says, now we are at a junction.
There exists two paths ahead; leading up or down.
If we do not act now, the existing species would become
extinct soon and will be the last ones on the planet earth.
It is never too late now to act in the right manner and
safeguard the endangered species and the environment.
We still have the last chance to wake up, understand the
truth and make a right choice.
Let us give a scope for our future generations to question us,
as of why we haven’t responded at the moment when we
were supposed to; to save all those species.
