3. History
Enacted in 1972 .
First passed by the British Indian Govt. as Wild Birds Protection
Act ,1887.
Second law was enacted in 1912 called the Wild Birds and Animal
Protection Act ,1935.
NOTE:The importance of protecting the wildlife was prioritized
only after 1960’s .
4. Importance of WPA
To reduce the decline in number of species .Example: At the end of the
20th century , India was home to closely 40,000 tigers . But a census in
1972 showed that it was reduced to 1827 .
To maintain ecological balance ,
To punish the wildlife threateners .
To increase the number of wildlife sanctuaries and national parks across
the nation .
5. Salient Features of WPA
Formation of wildlife advisory boards .
CITES(Convention on International Trade in EndangeredSpecies of Wild Floraand Fauna) or
Washington Convention .
Comprehensive list of the endangered wildlife of the country was prepared .
Prohibited the hunting of endangered species .
The act provides for license for the sale ,transfer and possession of some wildlife species .
Central Zoo Authority established in 1992 .
The act created six schedules .
National Board for Wildlife and National Tiger Conservation Authority was established

Schedule 1 :

Example :Tiger ,Blackbuck ,Cheetah , Blue Whale
Schedule 2:
#Animals under this list are accorded high protection .
Example : Macaque , Indian Civet ,Flying Squirrel
Schedule 3 and 4:
#About species that are not endangered .
Example : Himalayan rat , Flying Fox
Schedule 5:
#About animals that can be hunted .
Example : Mice , rat , fruit bats .
Schedule 6:
#Includes plants which are forbidden to cultivate.
Example : Pitcher plant .
