WHY IS RAKHI CELEBRATED?
Reading time- 5 mins
Let’s explore the history & relevance of this traditional festival in India:
In the tapestry of Indian culture, numerous festivals weave their threads of tradition
and significance. Amongst these vibrant celebrations, Raksha Bandhan stands tall as a
time-honored and cherished festival that showcases the bond of love between siblings.
Raksha Bandhan 2023 date is 30th August, Wednesday. This beloved festival,
celebrated with great fervor across the country, holds a deep historical relevance that
resonates with the hearts of millions.
The term "Raksha Bandhan" itself carries a profound meaning. "Raksha" translates
to "protection" or "safety," while "Bandhan" means "bond" or "tie." Together, they
encapsulate the essence of this joyous occasion, symbolizing the sacred bond of love
& protection.
Historically, Raksha Bandhan finds its roots in ancient Indian legends and mythology.
One such legend dates back to the Mahabharata, an epic saga that narrates the story of
a fraternal bond between Lord Krishna and Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas. In this
tale, Lord Krishna, moved by Draupadi's unwavering devotion, protected her in times
of distress. When her saree was forcibly unwound, Krishna ensured its endless length,
safeguarding her honor. The thread of the saree, known as the "rakhi," became a
symbol of divine protection and eternal love.
Another significant mythological tale associated with Raksha Bandhan is the story of
Goddess Laxmi and King Bali. According to mythology, King Bali, known for his
generosity, won the favor of Goddess Laxmi. As a result, Laxmi tied a sacred thread
around Bali's wrist, granting him immortality and protection. In return, Bali promised
to be her protector and provider. This legend reinforces the idea that Raksha Bandhan
transcends the boundaries of blood relations and extends to all those who share a bond
of love and protection.
The celebration of Raksha Bandhan carries immense significance in modern times too.
It not only strengthens the bond between siblings but also fosters a sense of
responsibility and protection between loved ones. On this day, sisters tie intricately
designed rakhis around their brothers' wrists, while brothers, in turn, vow to protect
and care for their sisters throughout their lives. This gesture symbolizes the
unbreakable bond of love, trust, and support that siblings share.
Raksha Bandhan has evolved over the years, embracing cultural diversity and
inclusivity. Today, the festival transcends gender and age barriers, with sisters tying
rakhis to sisters, friends, and even to the wrists of soldiers and protectors of society.
This expansion of the festival's reach reflects its enduring relevance in contemporary
times.
The festival's significance extends beyond the exchange of rakhis and gifts. It serves
as a reminder of the importance of nurturing and safeguarding relationships. It
prompts us to reflect upon the significance of protecting one another, not just
physically but emotionally and spiritually as well. Raksha Bandhan encourages us to
cherish the bonds we share and to honor the commitment to safeguarding those we
hold dear.
As this beautiful tradition continues to be celebrated year after year, its essence
remains unchanged. Prabhu Shriram- India’s Best Agarbatti and Dhoop brings to
