WHY DID JESUS HAVE TO DIE?
The Crucifixion of Jesus
Mark 15
21 A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father
of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his
way in from the country, and they forced him
to carry the cross.
22 They brought Jesus to the place called
Golgotha (which means “the place of the
skull”).
The Crucifixion of Jesus
Mark 15
23 Then they offered Him wine mixed with myrrh,
but He did not take it.
24 And they crucified Him. Dividing up His clothes,
they cast lots to see what each would get.
25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified
Him.
26 The written notice of the charge against Him
read:THE KING OFTHE JEWS.
The Crucifixion of Jesus
Mark 15
27 They crucified two rebels with Him, one on His
right and one on His left.
[28] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at Him,
shaking their heads and saying, “So!You who are
going to destroy the temple and build it in three
days,
30 come down from the cross and save yourself!”
The Crucifixion of Jesus
Mark 15
31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers
of the law mocked Him among themselves. “He
saved others,” they said, “but He can’t save
Himself!
32 Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down
now from the cross, that we may see and
believe.”Those crucified with Him also heaped
insults on Him.
The Death of Jesus
Mark 15
33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land
until three in the afternoon.
34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out
in a loud voice,
“Eloi, Eloi, lemasabachthani?”
(which means “My God, my God, why have
you forsaken Me?”).
The Death of Jesus
Mark 15
35 When some of those standing near heard this,
they said, “Listen, He’s calling Elijah.”
36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar,
put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink.
“Now leave Him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes
to take Him down,” he said.
The Death of Jesus
Mark 15
37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed His last.
38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from
top to bottom.
39 And when the centurion, who stood there in
front of Jesus, saw how He died, he said, “Surely
this man was the Son of God!”
Why didJesus die like this?
Jesus Before the Sandherin
Mark 14
55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were
looking for evidence against Jesus so that they
could put Him to death, but they did not find any.
56 Many testified falsely against Him, but their
statements did not agree.
57 Then some stood up and gave this false
testimony against Him:
Jesus Before the Sandherin
Mark 14
58 “We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this temple
made with human hands and in three days will
build another, not made with hands.’ ”
59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
60 Then the high priest stood up before them
and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer?
What is this testimony that these men are
bringing againstYou?”
Jesus Before the Sandherin
Mark 14
61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.
Again the high priest asked Him, “Are you the
Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of
Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One
and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
63 The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need
any more witnesses?” he asked.
Jesus Before the Sandherin
64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you
think?”They all condemned Him as worthy of
death.
65 Then some began to spit at Him; they
blindfolded Him, struck him with their fists,
and said, “Prophesy!”And the guards took
Him and beat Him.
Why didJesus choose to die
this way?
BUTWHY?
Isaiah 53
4 Surely He took up our pain and bore our
suffering,
yet we considered Him punished by God,
stricken by Him, and afflicted.
5 But He was pierced for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities; the
punishment that brought us peace was on
Him, and by His wounds we are healed.
Isaiah 53
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us
has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid
on Him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not
open His mouth; He was led like a lamb to the
slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is
silent, so He did not open His mouth.
Cleansing from sin Leviticus 5
14 The LORD said to Moses:
15 “When anyone is unfaithful to the LORD by sinning
unintentionally in regard to any of the LORD’s holy
things, they are to bring to the LORD as a penalty a
ram from the flock, one without defect and of the
proper value in silver, according to the sanctuary
shekel. It is a guilt offering.
Cleansing from sin Leviticus 5
16 They must make restitution for what they have
failed to do in regard to the holy things, pay an
additional penalty of a fifth of its value and give
it all to the priest. The priest will make
atonement for them with the ram as a guilt
offering, and they will be forgiven.
▪ Acts 3:18 – “God was fulfilling what all the prophets
foretold about the Messiah”
▪ Acts 4:11 “Jesus is the one referred to in the
Scriptures where is says ‘The stone which the
builders rejected has now become the
cornerstone’”.
SoGod had prophesied and planned that
Jesus should die on the cross.
BUT WHY?
▪Genesis 22 :2.
“Take your son, your only
son, whom you love”
