Children who are homeschooled are distinctively different from those who are traditionally schooled. Discussion
There are options for parents when deciding on their children's education. In order to make a worthy educational decision, parents need to understand the facts that surround the options they have and the implications that accompany their decisions. Although there is no research clearly showing which option is more beneficial to students, an argument for traditional schooling is that parents will always reap the fruits of traditional schooling each and every day (McGrath, 2000). Children who are homeschooled are socially deprived and backward is a key argument raised by those who are opposed to homeschooling. A contrast to their argument, research gives the opposite. As social and behavioral scientists have enriched our views of parenting over recent decades, neuroscientists have been equally busy learning about brain architecture in babies and children and learning about wonderful possibilities for responsive parenting that help construct the richest possible outcomes, including adult outcomes, that result from sensitive responses to our newborns and toddlers.
This course focuses on a new view of parenting and of children. Child development has a long history of adherence to a very successful medical model began around 1900 from the developments of knowledge about sanitation, germ theory of disease, conquering childhood illness with vaccines, and the development of therapies that address mental health problems and misbehaviors. If you look carefully at these topics, they rest on the belief that what matters in child development is pathology, and correcting pathology is the whole picture. There is a reading list of medical model topics in child development found under Resources for Parenting References, just under Syllabus in our course. I placed the only two books I recommend (but do not require) for our course. The rest of the information there is a fine list medical model references about pathology that can be used in other sections of BEHS 343.
Starting early in the twentieth century our first American child psychologist, G. Stanley Hall coined a phrase that has taken over child development beliefs about adolescence. Hall was descriptive, for in the early twentieth century there were no theories of child development. He coined the now-famous phrase of “storm and stress” to characterize adolescence. Even today, as psychologist Richard Lerner says, (and as you will read in this course), parents continue to define their teens in terms of a “pathology” If asked how their teen is doing, they will often answer, “Well, at least he hasn’t crashed the car.” Or “At least he is not into drugs.” Or, at least she is not pregnant and she hasn’t dropped out of school.” That is, teens are being measured against a whole Pandora’s box of expected pathology: “storm and stress.” And, in this course, many parents mention they are dreading adolescence as their children are growing older.
The new viewpoint comes from a question that has been around for decades. Neurologists and psychologists have quietly been inquiring about many topics, including that of the storm and stress of adolescence: “Isn’t well-being of adolescents (and all of us) more than just the absence of pathology? Isn’t well-being more than these negative descriptions parents use to describe their teens? As social and behavioral scientists have enriched our views of parenting over recent decades, neuroscientists have been equally busy learning about brain architecture in babies and children and learning about wonderful possibilities for responsive parenting that help construct the richest possible outcomes, including adult outcomes, that result from sensitive responses to our newborns and toddlers.
This course focuses on a new view of parenting and of children. Child development has a long history of adherence to a very successful medical model began around 1900 from the developments of knowledge about sanitation, germ theory of disease, conquering childhood illness with vaccines, and the development of therapies that address mental health problems and misbehaviors. If you look carefully at these topics, they rest on the belief that what matters in child development is pathology, and correcting pathology is the whole picture. There is a reading list of medical model topics in child development found under Resources for Parenting References, just under Syllabus in our course. I placed the only two books I recommend (but do not require) for our course. The rest of the information there is a fine list medical model references about pathology that can be used in other sections of BEHS 343.
Starting early in the twentieth century our first American child psychologist, G. Stanley Hall coined a phrase that has taken over child development beliefs about adolescence. Hall was descriptive, for in the early twentieth century there were no theories of child development. He coined the now-famous phrase of “storm and stress” to characterize adolescence. Even today, as psychologist Richard Lerner says, (and as you will read in this course), parents continue to define their teens in terms of a “pathology” If asked how their teen is doing, they will often answer, “Well, at least he hasn’t crashed the car.” Or “At least he is not into drugs.” Or, at least she is not pregnant and she hasn’t dropped out of school.” That is, teens are being measured against a whole Pandora’s box of expected pathology: “storm and stress.” And, in this course, many parents mention they are dreading adolescence as their children are growing older.
The new viewpoint comes from a question that has been around for decades. Neurologists and psychologists have quietly been inquiring about many topics, including that of the storm and stress of adolescence: “Isn’t well-being of adolescents (and all of us) more than just the absence of pathology? Skeletal growth along with brain development, grow rapidly during early childhood. Although it can vary from culture to culture, the fact remains that there will be undeniably a growth spurt in physical and mental development. Skeletal growth is what is the most obvious during development. We notice the physical changes of children getting taller, thinner, baby teeth falling out and even facial maturity. Brain development is noticeable over a period of time. Memory, language, attention, and coordination can all be indicators of mental development.
Asthma is said to be the most chronic disease in child development. It is defined as “a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath” (Clinic, 2016). Factors that have a major influence on asthma are pre and post birth smoking environments. Another factor that grossly effects asthma is air pollution. “Air pollutions exposure before 2-3 years of age appear most important for asthma development” (Nina Clark, 2010). Although there is no cure for asthma, nebulizers and inhalers are used to keep it under control. This health issue is so important to me because my husband suffers from severe asthma, and I worry that it will be passed down to our young daughters.

Child dEvElopmEnt is a vast and complex subject
which considers the growth and maturation of
the child and the possible influences on how this
occurs (Berk 2008). the nature-nurture debate has
endured for many years, with conflicting views
being proposed on how a child has the capacity to
reach adulthood (moules and ramsay 2008, Bee
and Boyd 2010). the nativist perspective is that
development is a predetermined pattern; the result
of the individual’s biological inheritance (Berk 2008),
whereas empiricists emphasise the importance of
external stimuli in child development, such as a
mother’s interaction with her baby (Glasper and
richardson 2010). however, many experts favour
a combination of innate biological components
and lifelong external influences – for example,
environment and social relationships – as playing a
vital role (moules and ramsay 2008).
the focus of this article is the development
of a child who was cared for in hospital during a
clinical placement of the first author, and takes
into consideration the physical and psychosocial
elements that influenced his growth and maturation.
for nurses caring for children and young people,
professional knowledge of how children typically
grow and develop is important. when a child’s
development does not proceed along the predicted
‘normal’ milestones, nurses need to understand the
implications for everyone involved.
Characteristics
people with down’s syndrome have 47 chromosomes
in each cell because they have an extra copy of
chromosome 21 (trisomy 21) (Burns and Gunn
1993). this additional chromosome and the
genetic material it accommodates causes too many
proteins to be produced in the cell, which disturbs
the normal growth of the fetus (selikowitz 1997).
this abnormal growth results in the cognitive and
physical impairments seen in children who have
down’s syndrome (hockenberry and wilson 2007).
there is a wide variation in symptoms associated
with the condition: some individuals achieve average
competence and others have severe intellectual
disability (Burns and Gunn 1993).
with one or two affected children being born
every day in England on average, down’s syndrome
is common and, because of the increased incidence
in babies born to older mothers, the incidence is
predicted to rise as more women are opting to delay
starting families (Bailey 2009, Blakemore 2009).

The couple faced a difficult decision when the wife became pregnant with their second child. Their first child had congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), which can sometimes result in atypical genital development in female newborns. There was a 1 in 8 chance the new baby would also have CAH. The couple could treat the fetus with steroids to reduce this risk, but there were concerns about the long-term effects of these drugs on the fetus. Ultimately, the couple decided against treatment, and when the baby was born it was a healthy girl without any issues.

FAMILIES MAY LEARN THEIR CHILD HAS A DISABILITY
during pregnancy, at birth (as baby Ella’s parents did), or
even later, when their child enters a child care program
in a home or classroom setting. Although a family’s reac-
tion to the news that their child has a special need may
depend upon the child’s age, the severity of the disability,
and the family’s cultural view of disabilities (Muscott 2002),
researchers liken the experience to the grieving process
that Kubler-Ross (1969) describes in her classic book, On
Death and Dying. Reactions move from denial of the disabil-
ity to anger at the diagnosis, to bargaining with the experts
involved in the diagnosis, depression, and to acceptance of
the disability. Acceptance of the diagnosis can take years,
as frequent reminders of the disability cause families to
reexperience the grief. For example, one parent said, “Grief
may hit you when you least expect it—during a Christmas
shopping trip . . . when you buy baby toys for a 9-year-old”
(Naseef 2001, 207).
Stages of adjustment
Some parents criticize this “grief” view of adjustment
to a disability as being patronizing and not fi tting their
experiences. Ulrich and Bauer (2003) propose instead that
the adjustment experience occurs in four levels as parents
gradually become aware of the impact of their child’s dis-
ability. These levels include the following:

CFAs are problematic and often have multiple areas of concern that necessitate comprehensive care and treatment from a collaborative medical team beginning early childhood.
This qualitative study seeks in identifying and understanding the psychological and societal effects individuals with CFAs may experience.

Child dEvElopmEnt is a vast and complex subject
which considers the growth and maturation of
the child and the possible influences on how this
occurs (Berk 2008). the nature-nurture debate has
endured for many years, with conflicting views
being proposed on how a child has the capacity to
reach adulthood (moules and ramsay 2008, Bee
and Boyd 2010). the nativist perspective is that
development is a predetermined pattern; the result
of the individual’s biological inheritance (Berk 2008),
whereas empiricists emphasise the importance of
external stimuli in child development, such as a
mother’s interaction with her baby (Glasper and
richardson 2010). however, many experts favour
a combination of innate biological components
and lifelong external influences – for example,
environment and social relationships – as playing a
vital role (moules and ramsay 2008).
the focus of this article is the development
of a child who was cared for in hospital during a
clinical placement of the first author, and takes
into consideration the physical and psychosocial
elements that influenced his growth and maturation.
for nurses caring for children and young people,
professional knowledge of how children typically
grow and develop is important. when a child’s
development does not proceed along the predicted
‘normal’ milestones, nurses need to understand the
implications for everyone involved.
Characteristics
people with down’s syndrome have 47 chromosomes
in each cell because they have an extra copy of
chromosome 21 (trisomy 21) (Burns and Gunn
1993). this additional chromosome and the
genetic material it accommodates causes too many
proteins to be produced in the cell, which disturbs
the normal growth of the fetus (selikowitz 1997).
this abnormal growth results in the cognitive and
physical impairments seen in children who have
down’s syndrome (hockenberry and wilson 2007).
there is a wide variation in symptoms associated
with the condition: some individuals achieve average
competence and others have severe intellectual
disability (Burns and Gunn 1993).
with one or two affected children being born
every day in England on average, down’s syndrome
is common and, because of the increased incidence
in babies born to older mothers, the incidence is
predicted to rise as more women are opting to delay
starting families (Bailey 2009, Blakemore 2009).

FAMILIES MAY LEARN THEIR CHILD HAS A DISABILITY
during pregnancy, at birth (as baby Ella’s parents did), or
even later, when their child enters a child care program
in a home or classroom setting. Although a family’s reac-
tion to the news that their child has a special need may
depend upon the child’s age, the severity of the disability,
and the family’s cultural view of disabilities (Muscott 2002),
researchers liken the experience to the grieving process
that Kubler-Ross (1969) describes in her classic book, On
Death and Dying. Reactions move from denial of the disabil-
ity to anger at the diagnosis, to bargaining with the experts
involved in the diagnosis, depression, and to acceptance of
the disability. Acceptance of the diagnosis can take years,
as frequent reminders of the disability cause families to
reexperience the grief. For example, one parent said, “Grief
may hit you when you least expect it—during a Christmas
shopping trip . . . when you buy baby toys for a 9-year-old”
(Naseef 2001, 207).
Stages of adjustment
Some parents criticize this “grief” view of adjustment
to a disability as being patronizing and not fi tting their
experiences. Ulrich and Bauer (2003) propose instead that
the adjustment experience occurs in four levels as parents
gradually become aware of the impact of their child’s dis-
ability. These levels include the following:

CFAs are problematic and often have multiple areas of concern that necessitate comprehensive care and treatment from a collaborative medical team beginning early childhood.
This qualitative study seeks in identifying and understanding the psychological and societal effects individuals with CFAs may experience.

Offering sufficient outdoor time improves the overall health of our children while lengthening attention spans, diminishing aggressiveness, improving test scores and ultimately advancing learning. This guide addresses those concerns.

environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
