These slides are from the Summer Institute on Theology and Disability held in Summer 2012. I presented interim data from an ongoing student focused on the strengths, supports, spirituality, and well-being of youth with intellectual disabilities or autism. For more information about this study and its findings, contact Erik Carter using the e-mail address on the final slide.
Data is defined as “information in visible form.” But what information remains invisible? How and why does it matter? Education is all about messaging. Ultimately, the “invisible” messages we send and receive determine how we lead students to understand society and their place in it. Quantitative data is a tool of “othering.” It shapes the way we educate without taking into account the racialized systemic barriers students and teachers confront in the classroom. The popular education model used in social justice movements has proven that lived experiences matter just as much as any numerical statistic. Compassionate storytelling can empower the data you’re given, your leadership and your students.
This session will explore how racialized messaging is embedded in student data profiles as stories that frame an educator’s expectation of a student’s capacity to master specific content areas. Methodically collecting anecdotal information from your students can help you gain insight about what those numbers actually mean to your work and to their development. We will unpack the ways data messages reinforce internalized racism and subsequently impact our roles as gatekeepers. Your interpretation of the numbers is an opportunity to honor your students’ experience and show how those account matter more than the “flat” stories numbers often relay.
These slides were part of a discussion section at the 2012 Summer Institute on Disability and Theology. The focus of the discussion was what makes a congregation a place of welcome and hospitality for people with developmental disabilities and their families. For more information about this discussion, contact Erik Carter (erik.carter at vanderbilt.edu).

2018 was plagued with more than a few insensitive social missteps. Like many of you, I viewed commercials, articles, news stories and advertisements wondering HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? How could they be so insensitive? But a quick perusal of the headshots usually uncovers the unfortunate “how”. To put it simply, there is a lack of diversity at the proverbial table and many are ignorant to the far reaching effects of their decisions. The obvious solution is to identify ways to bring awareness to the organizations, but where does that awareness come from? Where does the diversity of thought come from? While we’re thinking through it, what does diversity really mean? How do we prevent prevent similar missteps in the future? Join me to learn how I’ve overcome a lack of diversity in my professional life and how to apply my learnings to your career and organization

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Where are we going next? Remember that this is an interim snapshot of the experiences of Tennessee families. We hope to involve another 250 families. Our team (which includes a couple of doctoral students here this week--Thomas Boehm and Naomi Annandale) will shortly turn to interviewing as many as 50 young people with disabilities and their families to better understand their faith journeys, the supports they need to flourish in this area, and the ways in which congregations might extend a deeper welcome and richer support to these young people. Moving forward, we’ll also turn toward our focus toward congregations to better understand how they impacted by the presence, participation, and gifts of people with disabilities. We also hope to refine one of our reflection tools so that congregations can better use it to identify starting points for change efforts. Tomorrow afternoon, there will be a symposium time to discuss some of the research and writing interests many of you hold. Perhaps there are ways we might partner together. \n
Let’s return back to Chicago and to each of you. How might you draw upon this small snapshot into the lives of young people with disabilities and their families in your own work?\n
\n
With my time running short, let me close by thanking Bill Gaventa, David Morstat, and Bethesda Institute for the generous invitation to join you today and the very wonderful opportunity to learn alongside you this week. I look forward to the discussions that lie ahead this afternoon and throughout the week.\n\nThank you!\n
