What is USENET
 Usenet stands for users network
 It is a worldwide distributed Internet discussion system
 Developed in 1980 at the University of North Carolina and Duke University
 Derived from very early Unix networking technology
– “Unix to Unix Copy (UUCP)”
 It is Computers communicate through protocols
 It consists of a set of publicly accessible so-called newsgroupseach of
which deals with a specific topic
 The format and transmission of Usenet articles is similar to that of
Internet e-mail messages
 One of the most common observations about Usenet is that it seems to be
more difficult to use, especially for beginners
