Mergers and acquisitions are usually referred to as
one financial concept, but the terms define two
different business processes. During a merger, two
companies, usually of moderately equal success,
combine assets and employees in order to form a
stronger, single entity.

3.  In these instances, an agreement is made for one or both sets
of executives agree to relinquish some power in order to
realize a more profitable venture. A merger results in the
dissolution of each individual firm’s former stocks, and a
new, single stock with the power of both companies’ capital
behind it is then created as a replacement.
During an acquisition, however, a larger company
purchases a smaller one. Acquisitions are not usually as
amicable as mergers, and after purchase, the larger business
assumes the operational and management responsibilities of
the smaller firm, becoming the owner. The stocks of the
purchasing company continue to be traded under its
original name, but it retains all assets of the selling
company.
