Scrip is a fundraising method where non-profit organizations sell gift cards to retailers at full face value and receive a percentage of the card amounts as profit. Great Lakes Scrip Center buys gift cards from hundreds of retailers at a discount and distributes them to non-profits to sell. Families buy the gift cards from the non-profits and redeem them at full value when shopping, while the difference between the discounted purchase price and full value goes to support the non-profit. Estimates show that a family's regular household spending using scrip could raise over $800 per year for a non-profit organization.
