•Produces melatonin, a
hormone that affects the
modulation of wake/sleep
patterns and
photoperiodic (seasonal)
functions.

• Unclear, although possible
target sites are pigment cells
and sex organs
•Brain

5. MAJOR ACTION
• Its hormone melatonin can:
- protect against
neurodegeneration
- helps maintain circadian
rhythm and regulate reproductive
hormones
• The pineal gland’s full purpose is
still a bit of a mystery.
• Promotes sleep

6. DISEASES
• Pineal Cyst - Cysts of the pineal gland
Symptoms: Headaches, hydrocephalus, disturbances in
vision (gaze palsy), Parinaud syndrome, and vertigo
Cause: - Unknown. however, bleeding in the pineal
region or hormonal influences may play a role in the
development and progression of pineal cysts.
Treatment: usually only considered when a cyst is
causing symptoms, in which case surgery, stereotactic
aspiration or endoscopic treatment may be
recommended.
