An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is a burst of electromagnetic radiation caused by large explosions, especially nuclear explosions, that can damage electrical systems by inducing current and voltage surges. EMPs are categorized based on the altitude of the explosion: subsurface, surface, air, and high altitude EMP which occurs above 30km.
