Editor's Notes

  1. Hello, my name is Courtney George and I am from the Big 6 organization called Allies for Diversity. I wanted to give a presentation about Allies but in order to do that we need to cover some basics of our organization and what it means to be an ally.
  2. Everyone no matter their situation has privilege in one way or another. Whether it by white privilege, heterosexual privilege, or male privilege, it does not matter, everyone has privilege. This can be difficult for people to recognize at first, and many people get defensive, but it is important to know that having privilege does not make you a bad person, it is a universal inevitability. The sooner it is recognized, the sooner the patterns of injustice can be solved.
  3. Just like everyone has some form of privilege, everyone has experienced some form of discrimination in which one of their identities is oppressed. So a while a heterosexual woman experiences heterosexual privilege and she can relate to others based on that privilege, she also has been oppressed based on her sex, another way for her to relate to other who have also experienced privilege and oppression in other identities.
  4. This can be in regards to any identity whether it be race, gender, sexual orientation, ability, etc.
  5. Heterosexual person disclosing details of their relationship, free from fear of judgment or aggression. Men can wear whatever they want and not fear it will give someone permission to attack. Being able to enter a building through stairs and not think about trying to find a ramped entrance Not being monitored by employees in stores due to your skin color
  6. Everyone is capable of being an ally. No matter the circumstance, there is always something in which someone has privilege and can aid in solving the injustices of society for those who are subject to it. For example, Allies include men who work to end sexism, white people who work to end racism, heterosexual people who work to end heterosexism, able-bodied people who work to end ableism, and so on.
  7. William Wilberforce as well
  8. Josh Hutcherson is a famous Ally who advocates for the organization Straight but not narrow, which implores heterosexual people to be open to relationships and love of people with different sexual orientations.
  9. Why be an ally to others? The golden rule! You get what you give to others, and learn about people who are different from you in the process. Realistically, you will be forced to encounter you will find people of all different backgrounds, interests, etc. – it is important to be aware as you begin college and career. Learning about others also helps you learn about yourself and how your own identities affect your experience with the world and society.
  10. justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society. "individua
  11. I came in as a freshmen last year from out of state and needed a supportive group of friends who had similar viewpoints as myself. What I have benefited from being a part of the organization is my current groups of friends, understanding myself, and learning more than I ever could in the classroom.
  12. You can come to any amount of meetings or events, Allies is a very casual organization and we will be sending emails every week to tell you about what is going on that week.
  13. Thank you so much for listening to my presentation and I hope that even if you guys don’t come to Allies for Diversity events, that you at least be an ally to those around and have learned something, because we are dead serious about diversity.
