Early-stage educational steps needed to create more effective R&D driversPiotr Szymański
This is a presentation we made for our improvement propositions as a subgroup of the Top 500 Innovators programme. We worked on early stage educational steps needed to create more effective R&D drivers. We were thinking about middle schools and universities. How to create attitudes for more innovation and entrepreneurship. People say we did a good job. See for it yourself, your taxes paid for it. It was hard work of 9 intelligent people.
I do believe that public funded work, should be publically available for free, I am therefore releasing it on a Creative Commons licence. We tried hard to come up with something rigid, innovative, thorough and providing answers on many levels of changes, from the - oh let's implement them next semester - to - this will take a while...
We hope you can use it both for teaching and setting your mind towards students. If you are running an OTL office, feel free to ask us about an implementation plan for the entrepreneurship courses. Oh just feel free to ask and we'll help. We have a sense of mission, and in the end - it is your right, you paid for it. Excercise your god damn right!
Do not be afraid of making a change. Take a risk. Try. Make use of our ideas if you find them valuable. Do not be satisfied with mediocrity! The world will offer you comfort. But you were not made for comfort.
On a personal note I would like to thank Maria Klawe and the wonderful people from Harvey Mudd College, that were so hospitable and kind to share so much knowledge with me. And so much energy. Thank you! Special thanks to many people at Ministerstwo Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego who made this programme possible. And so many thanks to prof. Moncarz and the team of Stanford Center for Professional Development for hosting us and also teaching us so much! And so much thanks to all the people from the project team for being so kind and tolerant to all my annoying characteristics :D
2. From this chart it is clear that people over both male and females aged over
35 is the main demographic for a drama film. However i did not want to limit
myself. It is also clear that males under 35 are not very interested in drama
and would rather watch action.
Therefore i have decided to target females aged 18 and over.
3. Although 12 years aren't my target audience, i film fits more within the 12 nation
age reistrictions.
Research on 12A or 12
“Dangerous behaviour (for example hanging, suicide and self-harming) may be
present in 12 or 12A works but will not dwell on detail which could be copied or
present those activities as pain or harm free.
Discriminatory behaviour should not be endorsed by the film as a whole.
There may be infrequent sight of drugs misuse in a 12 or a 12A but the portrayal
should not be glamorised or provide instructional details.”
“At 12A, moderate violence is allowed but it should not dwell on detail. There should
be no emphasis on injuries or blood, but occasional gory moments may be
permitted if they can be justified by their context (for example brief sight of
bloody injury in a medical drama).”
“Action sequences and weapons may be present at 12 or 12A, and there may be long
fight scenes or similar.Weapons which might be easily accessible to 12 year olds
should not be glamorised in 12A and 12 works.”
“Sexual violence, such as scenes of rape or assault, may only be implied or briefly
and discreetly indicated at 12A. Such scenes must also have a strong contextual
justification.”
Quotes from BBFC.
4. As my film only involved subjects of drinking
and smoking, i felt that this age restriction
fits more with my short film.
This also opens up my audience to a younger
audience.
Although majority of the younger audience
wont be interested there will be a percentage
who will be interested. As i from my own
experience, i was very interested on the
drama genre from a young age.
5. I showed my short film, “20 days” to my
media class who fitted my target
audience, although it was mainly males.
They all emailed me what they thought.
I received mixed feedback and it definitely
influenced my decision making.
6. "Hello!
Love the focus pulling in the 2nd shot, but that first shot could be steadier.
Music transition could be smoother, and not sure how well the crazy-dramatic music works with casually eating
toast...
You need to work on the framing in some shots, EG.The “bye” at the end needs to me more central. And
sometimes the shots aren’t very clear, like when she’s getting a plate out.
Love the mystery of what she’s counting down to! Really nice. But it’s like Mr. Wroe said you need to put more
motivation in, like just show something on the side eluding to what she’s going to do...?
I dunno if it might be nicer just ending on her leaving her bedroom? The house makes more sense and gives more
closure, but I quite liked the shot of her leaving her bedroom and it might be nice to just end on that.
Charney is really well cast by the way. J
This is really cooool!J Nice one!Well done!! :D
xx “
Rosie
Rosies feedback was very useful. I agreed with most of what she said.
Specially with the overly dramatic music with the eating of the toast. I
changed the music to a less dramatic and more of a slower tempoed
music. Her feedback of leaving in her bedroom i disagreed with. I
thought my actor definietly had to leave from the main door to make it
clearer interms of the storyline.
7. "Nice shot using rule of thirds with girl on the right. (but cut it a bit shorter because
you can see tripod shake)
I like the use of 2nd soundtrack alongside the faster paced shots.
Panning shot where it transitions in mirror to her walking out the door was
aweeeesome
Shot in the bag where clothes go in was nice (possibly cut sections between to
show elapse of time)
to develop:
Some more shots in the walking scenes may need to be cut shorter.
I feel like the atmosphere is lifted up and down too much?
Unsure of sound of thedoor closing at the end, not sure it works (possibly need
altering so doesn’t sound so mechanic/stock sound effect)“
Eric
I agreed with erics first comment about cutting the shot shorter, and
this was done in my short film. Most of his feedback was to cut
certain shots shorter and i agreed with all of them. I thought by
making the cuts it made my film run a lot smoother.
8. "Soundboard really works well, it really helps convey the feel of your film. Maybe
makes eating toast seem super dramatic though, making it seem like an anti climax.
Cut the man on the bike. Shots in the mirror are really good, used subtly which is
nice. Have a shot of her walking away at the end, like a hero walking into the sunset,
and maybe push the soundboard up, so the sound piece finishes on the final shot!
Needs titles but thats no biggy, overall looks really good, some tweaking to be done
but good job so far keep it up!“
Elliot Similarrly to rosies comment the overly dramaticness of the
eating of the toast was a problem. Also agreed with what elliot
said.
9. Overall I made a lot of changed to fit what my
classmates has said.
but they weren't the only ones i had in mind
in creating big decisions in my construction of
my media products.
