We asked our 16 year old intern Veda to give companies a better insight of how Instagram works coming from someone within the slightly younger generation. We hope you will find it useful as they are truly great tips!
Thank you for your time!

What 16 year olds can teach you about Instagram!
1. What 16 year olds
can teach you about
Instagram!
An insight on the tips, tricks and ideas
that’ll help your instagram to grow more
popular!
2. Professional-looking
photos
Be smart when taking photos for
instagram. Messy photos or photos that
look like they were taken on a whim are not
going to get as much likes as staged ones.
For example, don’t take a photo of a
particular item with other items right beside
it unless you intend on them being there, or
don’t take a photo of an item on a surface
unless the surface is relatively clean and
spacious.
A simple step to making your account look
better.

3. Filters Filters can often make a photo look much
better - adjusting the appearance, even if
it’s a slight change, can be helpful as it
makes photos appear more artistic,
aesthetic, pretty, etc, depending on the
picture.
Using photos straight from your library
of photos is alright, but it’d have to be of
good quality to post without filters.

4. Layout
Nobody wants a messy caption
that looks all over the place,
stuffed with things you need to
add. Set a good layout for each of
your posts and stick to it!
Here’s an example of a good
layout:

5. Sticking to certain themes using
singular or not very many colours is
sometimes effective, although that’s
depending on the layout of your
instagram.
Don’t aim to have consistently plain and
boring themes, otherwise it won’t attract as
much people. Use eye-catching themes,
such as brighter colours, pretty pictures,
etc.
Then using your trusty hashtags, use them
to help the picture to get even more likes.

6. Switch up your
content
Posting the same content
consistently can be quite boring,
depending on the type of account
you have. If you have an account
based on one subject or item
specifically, try to switch up the
colours instead.
Repetitiveness is not an
attractive theme.
An example would be - you own a
restaurant.
You take photos of food only when
you could be posting the view from
outside the window, the neat layout
of the place before customers
arrive, the staff, etc.
It’s very useful.

7. Humor goes a long way on instagram. People love
humor, and that’s something that’ll never change.
A good sense of humor will attract likes as well as
followers that are also likely to continue liking your
posts for a good laugh.
Here’s an example of some light humour thrown
into a caption:

8. Good hashtags
Using popular and relevant hashtags is
important for other accounts to be able
to link with yours. If you post an imagine
without hashtags, you’re much less likely
to get loads of likes as people will have
more trouble finding you.
They’d need to search you up specifically,
and if you’re new to instagram, it’s
realistically probably not going to happen.
Hashtags allow you to get more publicity.

9. Mashing your Captions with your Hashtags
When creating a caption, try to avoid using hashtags within the caption (an example would be -
I went to the #shop to buy some #orangejuice). It makes the caption appear messy and slightly
harder to read. Add the hashtags afterwards either spaced somewhere underneath,
at the end of the caption, or in the comments section.

10. Punctuation and
Grammar
Having good punctuation and grammar is important - it makes
you look more respectable and smart.
It also either makes it seem as though you’ve hired someone
to take care of your account, or that you care enough for your
account to take the time to write something error-free.
Either way, they’re compliments to your account rather than
insults, which is what you’re looking to achieve here.
Check over spelling mistakes and such to fix them.

11. When the opportunity presents itself, tag
other people in your posts -
They’ll possibly like, and/or comment on
it, which can serve as a free review or
simply just good feedback. The more
comments, follows and likes, the better.

12. Location
Always add your location -
nearby businesses from the
area you’re in are likely to see
it and like it, or even follow
you. It’s similar to using
hashtags.

13. Links
If you’re an account owner that also happens to own a website
or main site that you’d rather people go onto, add that in your
captions and bio to lead other instagrammers back there.
Here’s an example of linking websites back to your Instagram:

14. Follow other accounts
By following other accounts, you’re likely to get a follow back.
Especially from accounts that state ‘follow for follow’ in their bio.
Keep an eye out for companies that are probably looking for followers,
or accounts that follow more than they’re following.

15. Reference yourself
Look back on your older photos (If you don’t have anything posted, then
leave this advice until you have a few different things posted), and ask
yourself; “What posts got the most likes? What hashtags did I use? Did
I tag anyone?” And using this information, apply it onto future posts.
Use similar hashtags, humor or whatever you used in your most popular
posts.

16. Other Social Media
Imagine you’re on Facebook and Twitter as well as
Instagram.
In your bio, you can always add ‘insta - @/me’ and
link people back to your account.
Using this on different platforms is helpful to get
your name out there for people to see and find in
places outside of instagram as well as inside.

This is me - Veda.
I worked with Educated Machine over
the summer as an intern, and as a
project, wrote up this slide to give
