The Jefferson salamander is a long, slender amphibian that is grayish brown to dark brown in color with pale blue skin. It lives in upland forests near small pools or ponds, hiding under debris during the day. The Jefferson salamander eats earthworms and other invertebrates. It is found in parts of the northeastern and midwestern United States but is endangered due to loss of vernal pool habitat from development and pollution. Protecting vernal pools is important for the survival of the species.
