Margaret Wellman is a human rights activist who co-founded the Prajwala Organization in India. She works to increase government awareness of sex trafficking, rehabilitate rescued children, and create rescue policies through collaboration between citizen groups and the government. Some of her strategies include creating transit homes and lobbying for a comprehensive rescue policy. She has rehabilitated over 3,800 girls and helped over 5,000 children through a school for children of sex workers. However, making progress at the local level is not enough and she still faces challenges like violence and threats.

Goals increase the governments awareness and make them focus their attention on sex-trafficking help rehabilitate the children who have been rescued from sex-slavery create a state rescue policy, “to develop both citizen groups and mass organizations for prevention, education, rehabilitation, and follow-up.” ( Ashoka Fellows)

4. Strategies creating transit houses to house run away sex slaves combing control of the transit houses in India creating and lobbying for a “Comprehensive Rescue and Rehabilitation Policy” by doing this she forces the state and national government to see the value in a collaboration

Successes She has been able to rehabilitate over 3,800 girls —she helps them to make a new (more normal) life and not fall back into poverty which might lead to prostitution Co-created a school for the children of sex workers, they have been working with over 5,000 children Created an 8 series handbook for HIV counselors

6. Challenges No matter how much social work and progress we make at the micro level it wont be enough without help from the state level too It’s a dangerous job, she’s been beaten up numerous times during interviews and has received hate mail and death threats

7. What can we learn from her? We must devote our attention to the SECOND GENERATION in order to make a real difference you need to break the cycle of sex slavery
