 As 2016 proved to be the hottest year in recent times, MS Swaminathan,
the architect of India's Green Revolution, thinks that it is time for India to
take anticipatory action to insulate major crops from adverse impact of
high mean temperature. The veteran expressed his concerns about rising
temperature trends and gave suggestions for securing the country's food
security with a series of tweets. "Having seen the hottest year in recent
times, here are my suggestions for food security with wheat and potato,"
he tweeted. Wheat is one of the main cereal crops of India and most
susceptible one to changes in winter temperatures. Wheat and rice
constitute the pillars of India's food security. "A mean temp rise of 1°C
will reduce duration of wheat crop by about 5 to 6 days and the yield will
go down by 4 quintals per hectare. We should breed wheat varieties with
high per day productivity than per crop productivity as they provide higher
yields in shorter duration," he said.
 Increasing water use efficiency was a necessary step to counter the water
scarcity issues, which the country could face in the coming years, said
Agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh. Adoption of sprinkler, drip
irrigation system and cultivation of coarse cereals particularly millets were
some of the measures to conserve water, he said. Speaking at a session on
International Green Week-2017 at Berlin, Singh said that good seeds and
fertilizer fail to achieve their full potential if plants are not optimally
watered. "In India, about 86% water is used for agriculture, 6 % for
industries and 8 % for domestic uses. The per capita availability of water
was 5,177 cubic meter in 1951 and it will reach to 1,341 and 1,140 cubic
meter in 2025 and 2050 - which is near to water scarcity line," he
said. Greater efficiency in irrigation should be pursued vigorously, said
Singh. "Adoption of water saving technologies such as sprinkler and drip
irrigation system have proven extremely effective. The concept of multiple
use of water must be popularized. Emphasis should be given on water
resources conservations through watershed development in suitable areas
and development of micro-water structures for rainwater harvesting," he
said
 Soybean futures edged lower on NCDEX as a stronger dollar weighed on
the market. Though, concerns that production in Argentina may be curtailed
by unfavourable weather capped some losses. The contract for January
delivery was trading at Rs 3071.00, down by 1.70% or Rs 53.00 from its
previous closing of Rs 3124.00. The open interest of the contract stood at
8570 lots. The contract for February delivery was trading at Rs 3129.00,
down by 0.95% or Rs 30.00 from its previous closing of Rs 3159.00. The
open interest of the contract stood at 155910 lots on NCDEX.
 Turmeric futures traded higher on NCDEX on rising demand at the spot
market. Though, some gains were capped on higher turmeric output due to
good sowing and favorable weather conditions at the producing belts. The
contract for April delivery was trading at Rs 6870, up by 1% or Rs 68 from
its previous closing of Rs 6802. The open interest of the contract stood at
13020 lots. The contract for May delivery was trading at Rs 6852, up by
1.15% or Rs 78 from its previous closing of Rs 6774.
 Coriander futures traded higher on NCDEX as speculators created fresh
positions amid improved demand in the spot market. Further, restricted
arrivals from major growing regions also fuelled the uptrend. The contract
for January delivery was trading at Rs 7325.00, up by 0.34% or Rs 25.00
from its previous closing of Rs 7300.00. The open interest of the contract
stood at 780 lots. The contract for April delivery was trading at Rs 7923.00,
up by 0.76% or Rs 60.00 from its previous closing of Rs 7863.00.
 Jeera futures showed mixed trend on NCDEX as the January contracts
traded higher due to rising domestic as well as export demand at the spot
market, while March contracts traded lower on reports of good climatic
conditions and hopes of higher yield in the season crop. The contract for
January delivery was trading at Rs 18935, up by 0.19% or Rs 35.00 from its
previous closing of Rs 18900. The open interest of the contract stood at 378
lots. The contract for March delivery was trading at Rs 17435, down by
0.57% or Rs 100.00 from its previous closing of Rs 17535.
