 Appreciating Nabard's initiative to fund irrigation works, Finance
Minister Arun Jaitley today said investments in such projects, including
Polavaram, start showing results in a short period of time and lead to
"social satisfaction". "This is first time Nabard is financing irrigation
projects... investment in agriculture through irrigation can in next season
start showing results and these results lead to social satisfaction, lead to
economic prosperity," he said at an event here. "Therefore, it is extremely
important that a very large part of the funding comes for that purpose.
Using the water resource of the country to its optimum so that the farmers
can benefit is one of the prime objectives," he said. Stressing that money
invested in irrigation has great importance, the Finance Minister said if one
invests in manufacturing, which is also important, returns are visible after
reasonably long period. It is true for several other sectors as well, he said
after handing over cheques to Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh
for implementing various irrigation projects.
 For the first time ever, sunflower oil, considered to be more premium
than the soyabean oil has become cheaper than the later. From being 15%
more than the soyabean oil during December 2015, the price of sunflower
oil today less by 6% than soyabean oil. "This is uncommon. Sunflower oil
has always been more expensive than the soyabean oil," said Davish Jain,
president, Soyabean Processors Association of India (SOPA). Sunflower
oil accounts for about 9% to 10% of the total edible oil consumption of
India. More than 90% of the sunflower oil requirement is met through
imports, mainly from Eastern Europe. This year, the world is going to
harvest a record sunflower seed production. As sunflower oil supplies from
Ukrain are expected to shoot up in the months to come, India is likely to
emerge as a major importer. "We have never seen sunflower oil prices
being cheaper than the soyabean oil prices," said BV Mehta, executive
director, Solvent Extractors Association of India adding, "The sunflower
oil prices are likely to come down further.“
 Coriander futures edged higher on NCDEX as speculators built up
fresh positions amid rising demand in the spot market. Further,
restricted arrivals from major growing regions also fuelled the uptrend.
The contract for January delivery was trading at Rs 7440.00, up by
0.12% or Rs 9.00 from its previous closing of Rs 7431.00. The open
interest of the contract stood at 10290 lots. The contract for April
delivery was trading at Rs 8040.00, up by 0.45% or Rs 36.00 from its
previous closing of Rs 8004.00. The open interest of the contract stood
at 4230 lots on NCDEX.
 Turmeric futures traded lower on NCDEX as the turmeric acreage in
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh was higher this year as compared last
year. However, rising upcountry demand at the spot market capped
some losses. The contract for April delivery was trading at Rs 6766,
down by 0.12% or Rs 8 from its previous closing of Rs 6774. The open
interest of the contract stood at 13225 lots. The contract for May
delivery was trading at Rs 6750, down by 0.09% or Rs 6 from its
previous closing of Rs 6756. The open interest of the contract stood at
640 lots on NCDEX.
 Soyabean futures traded higher on NCDEX on expectation of good
demand from the oil mills. Soyabean prices improved further tracking
higher prices in international markets on concerns over poor rainfall
affecting in Argentina's key crop areas. However, some gains were
capped by improving supplies in the domestic market and as Soybean
Processors Association of India (SOPA) forecasted soybean production
in 2016-17 at 114.91 lakh tonnes against 70 lakh tonnes last year. The
contract for January delivery was trading at Rs 3039.00, up by 0.23%
or Rs 7.00 from its previous closing of Rs 3032.00. The open interest
of the contract stood at 130440 lots.
