An annotated bibliography is a writing and research tool that you want to master because it allows you to record important information in a concise and scholarly way quickly. Begin this process by reading about annotated bibliographies in the Conducting Research and Forms of Writing sections in the Northcentral Writing Center (click the links in the left side navigation area of the Writing Center screen). Use the Writing Center handouts as a guide to capture your research in a concise manner. Format the annotated bibliography per the example shown below. Outlining in general is helpful to writers in seeing at a glance how information is organized, where gaps may be missing or details are unnecessary. An annotated outline follows the same basic conventions of organization as an outline. The difference here, however, is that you note where you have research that supports various elements of the paper. An annotated outline resembles a table of contents. Underneath each element of the outline, you include a notation of the source material. If you develop the habit of preparing an annotated outline for your assignments, including preparing a reference page, when you get to the draft stage, it becomes a simple matter of addressing each element in more detail..

INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the second part of our two-part media presentation. In the first part, we talked about key tools for
successful academic writing and gave an example of how these tools can make your dissertation writing
process faster and help you create a stronger dissertation document. This second part of our two-part media
presentation applies those key tools to the specific challenges of writing an action research dissertation.
PROCESS OF WRITING
The process of writing the research dissertation involves finding ways to help your readers understand both the
philosophy of research underlying the study and the methods employed in the study.
ACTION RESEARCH ROLES
It will be important to help your readers to understand the roles of the Principal Investigator and the participants
in your Action Research study. Rather than the "all-knowing" researcher who controls conditions and conducts
an experiment on or to someone or something else, Action Research assumes that the participants themselves
have insight and an important perspective and role.
ACTION RESEARCH METHODS
As a writer, you will want to help your reader understand that this idea of democratizing the research process
applies regardless of the research methodology used. Action Research involves methods that would be
familiar in both qualitative and quantitative types of research, and it would be very common to find mixed
methods in a particular study. Regardless of the methodology used, the participants can and will play an active
role at each step of the research process.
Help your readers to understand that the participants are active in the research process of planning, deciding,
and helping to shape the implementation of the study protocol and analysis of the findings. Also, help your
readers to understand that findings are interpreted or understood in part based on "meaningfulness" to the
participants engaged in the work.
An example might be a study on abusive behavior in hospitals among nursing and other staff. Members of the
study team could help refine the survey instruments, later take the survey themselves as part of the participant
pool, and help to interpret the findings.
IMPLICATIONS FOR WRITING...
In the next few minutes, we will discuss four elements of writing the action research dissertation. You will want
your dissertation to clearly explain the following:
1. How the research questions that you asked led you to decide to use action research.
2. How the research questions that you asked informed they way in which you organized and presented

This first section of your paper is the introduction of your paper. It is not labeled separately. It introduces the topic of your paper and the points you intend to make. Why is this topic important to psychology? This section also introduces how your paper will be organized, such as stating that you will review the historical background of the topic and then follow it with an overview of related current trends and discussion.
To summarize the introduction needs to be one to two pages in length. The introduction provides a brief overview of what will be covered and the purpose of the research paper.
Literature Review
This is the beginning of your literature review. Keep in mind, the literature review is not just a summary of each individual article. It is also a critical analysis of your topic supported by information you learned when reading the background literature. Your APA formatted citations for the sources of the information you are discussing is your indication of the literature reviewed.
This section will give an overview of the history of your topic and the theories being covered. It will discuss where the theories came from and how they have evolved over time. Depending on your topic, it may include comparisons and contrasts between the historical theories you are covering.
To summarize the literature review is taken in part from what you wrote in Week 3 Assignment 2. It should include at the very minimum the 6 articles that you found for that assignment. The literature review is not a copy of that material. Rather, it is a synthesis of the material you found into a cohesive review of the literature on your chosen topic.

Problem Statement
While there are several different variables which may be barriers to academic excellence and achievement, there are two factors that might account for the required academic improvement and achievement in elementary schools. These factors include lack of motivation as well as presence of learning disabilities. Therefore, it is important to identify those factors that lead to learning difficulties. For instance, teachers who are not aware of various characteristics of such areas of concern might become ineffective in their work more so when dealing with students with learning disabilities. Thus, in an effort to better help learners with learning disabilities, it is important for the teachers and other stakeholders to be aware of the several differences between those learners who do not attain their academic goals due to lower motivation as well as those who struggle with frustrations resulting from their learning disabilities.
Moreover, many learners are in need of motivation in order to achieve their academic goals. Thus, there is need to emphasize on the importance of motivation for learners’ success in education. This is because lack of motivation is usually very detrimental for their academic achievement thus resulting to learners paying less attention to details and activities, lower grades and presenting negative attitudes and behavior towards learning. Motivation therefore is an important aspect for learners to experience so as to overcome academic challenges as well as develop positive attitudes and mindsets about learning and education in general.
The most significant function of education is to encourage interest in learning among students with learning disabilities. This is supposed to be done in a way that brings about the desired benefits and impacts to them as well as the society. This will ensure they are effectively integrated into the society and will enable them to obtain academic achievement. Thus, it is important to acknowledge that motivation is important for all learners’ academic achievements. However, as much as motivation plays a significant role in academic achievement for all learners, learners with learning disabilities are usually more vulnerable to lack of motivation throughout their life in school and education in general. Hence, lack of motivation as well as attention problems are likely to affect their learning efforts. They often face massive barriers in their academic achievement as well as adult outcomes compared to their peer without learning disabilities. 11.1 The Purpose of Research Writing

1. Identify reasons to research writing projects.
2. Outline the steps of the research writing process.
Why was the Great Wall of China built? What have scientists learned about the possibility of life on
Mars? What roles did women play in the American Revolution? How does the human brain create,
store, and retrieve memories? Who invented the game of football, and how has it changed over the
years?
You may know the answers to these questions off the top of your head. If you are like most people,
however, you find answers to tough questions like these by searching the Internet, visiting the
library, or asking others for information. To put it simply, you perform research.
Whether you are a scientist, an artist, a paralegal, or a parent, you probably perform research in your
everyday life. When your boss, your instructor, or a family member asks you a question that you do
not know the answer to, you locate relevant information, analyze your findings, and share your
results. Locating, analyzing, and sharing information are key steps in the research process, and in
this chapter, you will learn more about each step. By developing your research writing skills, you will
prepare yourself to answer any question no matter how challenging.
Reasons for Research
When you perform research, you are essentially trying to solve a mystery—you want to know how
something works or why something happened. In other words, you want to answer a question that you
(and other people) have about the world. This is one of the most basic reasons for performing research.
But the research process does not end when you have solved your mystery. Imagine what would happen if
a detective collected enough evidence to solve a criminal case, but she never shared her solution with the

As Lau and Chan write, “A critical thinker is able to deduce consequences from what he knows, and he knows how to make use of information to solve problems, and to seek relevant sources of information to inform himself” (2015). While the process of critical thinking may involve exposing untruths and poor reasoning, it also involves engaging in cooperative reasoning for the purposes of shared goals and decision making. We engage in the steps of critical thinking to learn deeply, to improve our ideas, to strengthen arguments and to “enhance work processes and improve social institutions” (Lau, 2011).

While there are several different variables which may be barriers to academic excellence and achievement, there are two factors that might account for the required academic improvement and achievement in elementary schools. These factors include lack of motivation as well as presence of learning disabilities. Therefore, it is important to identify those factors that lead to learning difficulties. For instance, teachers who are not aware of various characteristics of such areas of concern might become ineffective in their work more so when dealing with students with learning disabilities. Thus, in an effort to better help learners with learning disabilities, it is important for the teachers and other stakeholders to be aware of the several differences between those learners who do not attain their academic goals due to lower motivation as well as those who struggle with frustrations resulting from their learning disabilities.
Moreover, many learners are in need of motivation in order to achieve their academic goals. Thus, there is need to emphasize on the importance of motivation for learners’ success in education. This is because lack of motivation is usually very detrimental for their academic achievement thus resulting to learners paying less attention to details and activities, lower grades and presenting negative attitudes and behavior towards learning. Motivation therefore is an important aspect for learners to experience so as to overcome academic challenges as well as develop positive attitudes and mindsets about learning and education in general.
The most significant function of education is to encourage interest in learning among students with learning disabilities. This is supposed to be done in a way that brings about the desired benefits and impacts to them as well as the society. This will ensure they are effectively integrated into the society and will enable them to obtain academic achievement. Thus, it is important to acknowledge that motivation is important for all learners’ academic achievements. However, as much as motivation plays a significant role in academic achievement for all learners, learners with learning disabilities are usually more vulnerable to lack of motivation throughout their life in school and education in general. Hence, lack of motivation as well as attention problems are likely to affect their learning efforts. They often face massive barriers in their academic achievement as well as adult outcomes compared to their peer without learning disabilities. Mars? What roles did women play in the American Revolution? How does the human brain create,

years?
You may know the answers to these questions off the top of your head. If you are like most people,
however, you find answers to tough questions like these by searching the Internet, visiting the
library, or asking others for information. To put it simply, you perform research.
Whether you are a scientist, an artist, a paralegal, or a parent, you probably perform research in your
everyday life. When your boss, your instructor, or a family member asks you a question that you do
not know the answer to, you locate relevant information, analyze your findings, and share your
results. Locating, analyzing, and sharing information are key steps in the research process, and in
this chapter, you will learn more about each step. By developing your research writing skills, you will
prepare yourself to answer any question no matter how challenging.
Reasons for Research
When you perform research, you are essentially trying to solve a mystery—you want to know how
something works or why something happened. In other words, you want to answer a question that you
(and other people) have about the world. This is one of the most basic reasons for performing research.
But the research process does not end when you have solved your mystery. Imagine what would happen if
a detective collected enough evidence to solve a criminal case, but she never shared her solution with the

As Lau and Chan write, “A critical thinker is able to deduce consequences from what he knows, and he knows how to make use of information to solve problems, and to seek relevant sources of information to inform himself” (2015). While the process of critical thinking may involve exposing untruths and poor reasoning, it also involves engaging in cooperative reasoning for the purposes of shared goals and decision making. We engage in the steps of critical thinking to learn deeply, to improve our ideas, to strengthen arguments and to “enhance work processes and improve social institutions” (Lau, 2011).

Your Final Project will be a medium-length essay in which you address the cultural viewpoints toward death and dying in Western society and compare these to the perspectives toward death and dying in other parts the world. As the course content will point out, much about the Western response to death and dying amplifies the process of grief and bereavement, perhaps unnecessarily. In the West, death is something that is denied and, in many ways, is something that people seem ill-equipped to deal with once the event occurs or is imminent. Your job in this paper will be to put on your social scientist cap and offer “cultural solutions” to the way that death and dying is dealt with in Western society.
Assignment
Based on your own independent research in which you compare the cultural beliefs toward death and dying in Western societies to those in Eastern societies such as China, Vietnam, Japan, and so forth, write an essay that addresses the following points:
Describe in detail the major differences between the Western viewpoint toward death and dying and those in these Eastern societies (you may focus on one country, such as China, or talk about Eastern societies more generally). Be sure to describe the rituals involved with the process of death and dying, the various technologies, or anything that helps explain these differences.

This activity takes you to another critical step as a researcher and academic scholar: how to evaluate the merits of research materials. This includes understanding the whys behind an article, who the authors are and their expertise, and analyzing the organizational flow and content. For a great overview of evaluating research materials, visit Colorado State University's Evaluating Resources, located under your weekly resources. Warm-Up Activity 7.3: How to Prepare an Annotated Bibliography Throughout your studies, you will read many texts and journal articles. In many courses, you will be asked to prepare an annotated bibliography to assist you in preparing key assignments. An annotated bibliography is a writing and research tool that you want to master because it allows you to record important information in a concise and scholarly way quickly. Begin this process by reading about annotated bibliographies in the Conducting Research and Forms of Writing sections in the Northcentral Writing Center (click the links in the left side navigation area of the Writing Center screen). Use the Writing Center handouts as a guide to capture your research in a concise manner. Format the annotated bibliography per the example shown below. As you continue research in other doctoral courses, you will expand this bibliography as a record of your thinking and efforts. Here’s another time-saving tip. When you locate research that you

An annotated outline follows the same basic conventions of organization as an outline. The difference here, however, is that you note where you have research that supports various elements of the paper. An annotated outline resembles a table of contents. Underneath each element of the outline, you include a notation of the source material. If you develop the habit of preparing an annotated outline for your assignments, including preparing a reference page, when you get to the draft stage, it becomes a simple matter of addressing each element in more detail. As you get more comfortable with using an annotated outline, you likely will expand upon your annotation length; in fact, some writers use their annotations from an annotated bibliography and plug them into an outline format.
