The Internet has made youth more engaged in campaigns and politics overall, and increased youth political participation is important for democracy.
Comparing social movments
The Tea Party movement arose in response to growing dissatisfaction with the federal government, large deficits, and the Obama administration. It is a loosely organized conservative movement that is populist in nature and against big government. While currently popular, especially among independents, analysts disagree on whether it represents the beginning of a new conservative era or is a reactionary movement defined by fear and anger that may not endure. The movement could potentially reshape American politics in the coming decade if it develops strong leadership and a clear vision and agenda.

We’ve got a rather chewy edition for you this month. You see, there’s a general election happening - you’ll have spotted this in the press, unless you live in a Grand Designs- style eco-bunker with no TV and patchy wi-fi. It’s kind of a big deal.
The Big Three – Cameron limbering up in the blue corner, Miliband boxing clever in red, Clegg strapping on his yellow gloves – have been set for a rumble for some time, closing in on the last corner of the ring where Farage, Sturgeon, Wood and Bennett are fighting for the title of ‘fourth credible option’. A subjective notion, of course.
Free democratic elections are the ultimate expression of modern fairness – if you don’t put an X in the box, you don’t have the right to complain about whoever’s in power, right? Well, that may or may not be the case, as voter apathy continues to plague the ballot boxes (or rather, totally leave the ballot boxes alone while going to the pub instead to complain about how ‘they’re all the same’ or ‘none of them are worth voting for’) – so will this general election be any different to those of recent-ish years? Have the televised leaders’ debates and massive social media buzz turned this into our first truly digital election? Are people better informed today, or just angrier and more annoyed? This report aims to give you an eye-opening view on the nature of the whole hoopla.

The United States has one of the lowest voter turnout rates among modern democratic political systems. During the last decade, many initiatives have been undertaken to increase voter participation, yet concerns about the possibility of election fraud have also increased. Additionally, some political interests feel threatened by the increase in turnout among some traditionally low-turnout ethnic minorities. Several states have recently passed legislation imposing new registration and identification requirements. This has sparked debate about whether these are tactics intended to suppress turnout or to prevent fraud. Think about the media’s role in the election process and how both mass media and social media can impact the election process. How has the media’s role changed in recent years, especially considering President Trump’s stance on “fake news”?

How does the media influence public opinion?

In my opinion, the media in the United States is in a very decrepit state. As Jon Stewart points out nightly on the Daily Show, the bias presented by various networks is appalling. News has become less about informing people about facts, and more about telling people what their opinions should be. People tune in to the network that matches their already established political ideology, preventing them from seeing the world from more than one viewpoint, and making them less perceptive to the viewpoints of others. Although I obviously hold opinions of my own, I think that it is incredibly important for people to be capable of actually challenging what they believe, and to enter every argument with the knowledge that their opinion might actually be swayed. If people are so stubborn in their beliefs, arguments will devolve into pointless shouting matches that only serve to make both sides hate each other more. Unfortunately, this sentiment is provoked by our media, who often insult their counterparts on opposing networks, rather than attempt to intelligently refute their arguments.
The power of the media to influence public opinion, and even to provoke an entire movement, was demonstrated recently by the emergence and popularization of the Tea Party. One network aggressively promoted this movement,

by providing attendance and organization information such as protest dates, locations, and website URLs. The network’s website disseminated various information about the movement, and popular figures for the channel urged viewers to join them at Tea-Party events. This network was also rather one-sided in its support of the movement, blatantly attacking one political party with statements like, “in the case of the current crisis the blame appears to have been assigned almost totally to Obama, at least by the thousands of U.S. taxpayers attending near-spontaneous ‘tea parties’ in protest of the Democrats agenda of more taxes, increased spending, higher deficits and a surge of borrowing to pay for it all” (Peter Roff).
The bias in the media is certainly not one-sided.

I think that the bias in the media is the root of one of the deepest political issues that we have in this country, as it prevents civil discourse between individuals of separate ideologies, inhibiting compromise and progress.

Political parties are ongoing coalitions that work to elect candidates under a common label. They allow diverse groups and interests to unite behind a single alternative. The US generally has a two-party system due to its electoral rules and restrictions on minor parties, as well as public attitudes. The Republican party coalition consists primarily of white, middle-class Protestants, while the Democratic coalition includes groups like minorities, unions, and urban residents.
