Today marks the date which
celebrates the essential
principles of press freedom, to
assess press freedom around
the world, to safeguard the
media from attacks on their
independence and to pay tribute
to journalists who have lost their
lives in the exercise of their
profession. World Press Freedom Day was declared by the UN General Assembly in 1993.
At the heart of UNESCO’s decree is freedom of the press and freedom of expression. According to
UNESCO, these freedoms grant for mutual understanding to build sustainable peace. It is a great
occasion to inform the public of violations of press freedom – a remembrance that in dozens of
countries around the world, publications are “censored, fined, suspended and closed down”,
whereas “journalists, editors and publishers are harassed, attacked, detained and even murdered”.
It is a date to strengthen and develop initiatives in favour of press freedom, and to assess the state
of press freedom worldwide. It is also a reminder to governments of the need to respect their pledge
to press freedom and is also a day of reflection among media professionals about the issues and
ethics of press freedom.
