What is HIPAA?
 HIPAA stands for Health Insurance Portability
and Accountability Act enacted August 21,
1996.
 HIPAA is a public law that has been design to
keep patients information safe.
HIPAA Privacy
 The Privacy Rule applies to health plans,
health care clearinghouses, and to any health
care provider.
 Privacy rule protects individual health
information which is called protected health
information (PHI).
HIPAA Security Rule
 The Security Rule establish a national set of
security standards for protecting certain health
information that is held or transferred in electronic
form.
 The Security Rule, like all of the Administrative
Simplification rules, applies to health plans, health
care clearinghouses, and to any health care
provider who transmits health information in
electronic form in connection with a transaction for
which the Secretary of HHS has adopted
standards under HIPAA.
